Just got my heads back from the machine shop, and I'm thinking forward to what I'll need to start putting the engine back together. On the list is a Snap-On Techangle torque wrench, but I'm debating sizes...the 1/2" will obviously do the job, but the 3/8" will be far more useful in general. I'm wondering if anyone has measured the torque values on the 1st and 2nd 90-degree turns of the head bolts (MY 87), and if its w/in range of the 100 ft lbs max of the 3/8" Techangle or if I'll just need to go with the 1/2" model.

I got the 1/2" model. You will want this for the heads. Trust me.

Get both, problem solved.
The 1/2 inch one is going to be pretty hard to use on the head bolts, unless you are a big fellow, a real big fellow.
I have the 3/4 one for the head bolts.

Come on Greg, I used the 1/2" and I'm not that big. 6' 200#. I can't imagine using a 3/8" though.

I do not think I could get them done with a 1/2 inch, they are really, really tight on that last 90.

And, if 1 = 15 ft lb, 2 = 90*, 3 = 90*, a torque wrench should not be required for 2 & 3, correct?

This has recently been discussed. The third 90 is the issue.

I think the first one is for the engines with studs, and it has been discussed if that was not a miss print or not.

Correct in that you do not have to have a torque wrench for the angle part, but that is one of the things that makes the Snap-On Tech-Angle wrenches so useful is it not only gives you torque readings but also degrees.

Wow guess my 3/8 craftsman torque wrench is just dumb...... Need a better one maybe. I'm sure it can do 15 ftlbs

It is fine for that, what I thought we were talking about was the last 90, not the first torqued one.

You could use a breaker bar and a angle measurer thing you put on the wrench that has a little arm to hold it in place. But why not have a really cool torque wrench to make it perfect. I was able to get within 1 degree with my Techangle. Figured that was close enough. I don't know if you could get within 5 or 10 degrees with one of the add on things. I had very learned people who have built many engines advise me to not use one of the add on angle thingys.

on my old mopars we just used an paint pen, marked it, went 90.... but thats not a bad idea to have a nice one.. ill have to check pricing.
