I don't think the speedo was swapped out. The 85mph was mostly prevalent ca. 1980.
Jim,

Not true, my '81 had an 85mph speedo that was replaced early in the cars life, but it did end up w/ a ZERO miles ODO at the time of that replacement and BLU82 had an 85mph speedo.

The 85mph speedo was REQUIRED by the Feds in the early '80's!

Bruce,

Thanks, I prefer BLU82 to this car all day long, every day! It is spectacular!

There was that very nice 5 speed 79 Mocoa Brown car with 29,000 miles that sold for $ 12,900 on ebay about a month ago. Not to many low mileage older cars that have sold recently to get a good estimate on percieved values. 77Tony

I had an 82 5-speed that had a 160mph speedo ,may still have the speedo around somewhere. Everything was still in German,go-figure.Ray

Someone posted about this car here a couple months ago on craigslist add. He was saying aunts car and all. I guess he couldn't sell it.

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...poiler-ob.html

It does say manual in this old post, but I bet its the same car.

I have an 82 Kiln Red car with Comp Package.
All my 82's had 85 mph speedos except for the Jubilee Euro S.

That is correct...the German (ie. EURO) cars did have the 160 speedo and many, many of the cars that came to the US got changed over to that speedo, but that is NOT what they were shipped with.

As to value... There was that '86 5spd that had 6500 miles on it (or something like that) and was like new in every way that went for something like $22k or $25k (though they had been looking for $35k!) and that would certainly be a more desirable car than this one... I'd say anything below about $25k would not be out of the question and the lower you get it the better off you are... Of course I typed that and now I remember this car may well have MORE than 5700 miles, has a pretty serious dent in the rear qtr panel that may or may not buff out as well as that rust spot on the lower part of the hatch near the key hole.

The miles REALLY, REALLY need to be verified and the bad exterior spots need fixing and they need to be done PERFECTLY so IF the miles are correct I'd start by taking off $5k for the body issues and then probably another $4k for all the work that probably needs to be done to it (all fluids and rubber and in op A/C recharge, etc)...

SO the updated price in my book is less than $17k!

If anybody here is serious somebody should go look at it, but ebay insanity will likely pick the winner from someone that doesn't know all that much about these cars.

^^^^^
Could be but I think it was a federal regulation that cars had to be sold with an 85mph speedo. That does not mean they all were nor that a dealer could not change them out after sale but before delivery, but that is one I am not familiar with for sure.

I'd still be curious why the underhood around the intensive wash reservoir was so dirty. That shouldn't be the case on a 5.7k mile car, not matter how poorly it was kept...

I didn't find what I would call a hard end date, but guessing some production etc delay occurred after the law was scrapped. From wikipedia ...

On September 1, 1979, in a regulation that also regulated speedometer and odometer accuracy, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) required speedometers to have special emphasis on the number 55 and a maximum speed of 85 mph (137 km/h). However, on October 22, 1981, NHTSA proposed eliminating speedometer and odometer rules because they were "unlikely to yield significant safety benefits" and "[a] highlighted '55' on a speedometer scale adds little to the information provided to the driver by a roadside speed limit sign."

Look around the edges of the intensive wash reservoir at the paint, there is quite a bit of dirt and muck under there and that is a place that is fairly tough to get dirty... It does not get dirty just driving around the block and stuff...
