You could always upgrade to 16" phone dials.
The fact that kiln red wasn't an official color until 83 doesn't mean there can't be a late 82 model with that color. This car was built in August of 82 - that's after the German summer break, when they would normally make 83 models. I don't have an explanation for this, but how can we rule out that the car was ordered late in the 82 model year, and they couldn't get it into production before August? I have no idea...
I find James' theories about the mileage quite interesting. I certainly don't think it's a high mileage car. But I, too, was surprised about how the leather "folded" on the drivers seat, and the absence of the 85 mph speedo. However, the latter could again be explained by the late production date - I don't know.
Regardless, this is a time capsule, and whoever gets it is very lucky. I personally wish it didn't have side moldings, but otherwise it's an awesome example of the earlier 928 models.
PS: Does anybody else wonder, if the glove box lid is vinyl? It seems its grain and shine is quite different...

Seems like a lot of wear/compression for a 5700 mile seat.
Nicole ... my July built 82 has quite a few 83 mechanical components, so I see no reason why an 83 colour mightn't also appear early. I hadn't noticed the glove box lid, but it is different and does look like vinyl ... which is different to mine which has matching leather dash and glovebox.
A few pics underneath would give a lot more clues. Still a nice car.

I dunno, looks like it couuld have been a granny car--original [older] owner that never left town and just used it to go shopping. The seat leather looks hard, but doesn't have the usual stitching letting go in the seat area and the side bolsters aren't dicked up. The shifter looks new and so do the gas and brake pedals. The hood liner looks perfect, all original stickers that look new and haven't curled or turned brown and the washer filler tube hasen't turned brown from heat releasing the browmine in the plastic. If it's not 5K on the odo, it's still a great time machine. Personally, I'd rather have Blue 82

This is really neat! One of my fav color combos.
Re: patina,
I think what we are seeing that may be throwing us off is hoe/where it was stored/located. Boca Raton, coastal. Salty air.
Might explain the splotchy deposits on the gage binnacle. Actually, it explains alot IMHO.
Re: James's comment about the 85mph speedo,
I don't think the speedo was swapped out. The 85mph was mostly prevalent ca. 1980.
I believe this car is the real deal.

I'm with Jim on this. I'm looking real hard at the same stuff, and thinking this is not out of question for a car that has been stored for this long. Don't know the conditions of storage. Also, don't know the girth of the original owners - doesn't take much to flatten the pleats a bit on these early seats, which were glued not stitched. And big guys liked these cars for the room compared to the air pumpers.
Will be interesting to see what it goes for.

Nit-pick all you want this car is a survivor .> Looks like someone fired up the time machine and opened a wormhole to the 82. The Plating on the underhood clamps and such looks very very nice, and all the hoses look original and in very good condition considering the age. Not much sign of heat baking the underhood hoses and wires that you see after 20k miles or so. If I had the $$ and the place to keep it I would ****** this car up 'roger box' or not.
Probably someone who cared for this car passed away and its now up for grabs.. [Haunted car? Ghost rider!]

Not out out the question, but some time-lapse extrapolation may be neccessary, as I'm sure weight loss has occured.
