And yes, auto repair and modification shops are notorious for sucking time and money, with questionable results. It takes time to figure out the best way to handle them. I haven't figured out the magic formula. But what I have learned, is that some people *are* professional. And when I find vendors or mechanics that are very reliable, very timely, and very fair, I stick with them and am very loyal. They are worth the extra cost. I think that's one of the key motivators. Money. That's why you see those high-end shops on TV, finishing complete vehicle rebuilds in two weeks. Because their clients are willing to pay them $100k to get it done quickly. If you don't have that kind of cash, you are going to get put on the back burner, regardless if you are paying up front, or on the back-end, on completion.

So, is this any more than a whole lot of frustration trying to get some serious fabrication done right? I don't quite see how the particular hobby has anything to do with being disappointed and frustrated with the quality of work performed by others. I've been having quite a war with getting my yard relandscaped. I could do it myself but I decided to let others do it. Every time I go out to check their work I find some unbelieveably horrendous mistake - retaining walls that don't retain, sprinkler systems that don't sprinkle or sprinkle in the wrong places, work half-done and abandoned. That's when they have done any work. They disappear for 3 weeks at a time then show up one day and proceed to make another mess of things. My wife cannot tolerate the stress of managing this project. She'd rather do nothing to our sorry yard. So far I've spent over $40K and the yard is still a mess. Want to take up gardening?
get references, talk to past customers, check credentials....ans NEVER pay for substandard work....after a few problems, fire them and call the inspectors, and or product manufacturers.. no manufacturer wants their product screwed up...
kind of the same way to check out a 928 shop...

don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am in this business.... before you make this kind of investment ALWAYS vet your contractor...

There isn't a company out there that has done what he wants done to the hood exactly the way he wants it done. He couldn't call up a guy to do the work on his variocam because it only existed in his head.
No one is going to take the risk of saying they'll do it on spec, they all want money up front and enough for them to learn how to do it. It's just the nature of being on the bleeding edge.

There were a couple of projects I had in mind for my 944 Turbo for better boost control, but...couldn't build it myself or find anyone whom could that would.
One project I found a guy to build a prototype for me, BUT he just had to redesign it and after his re-design failed he lost interest.

I'm really close to just selling off all my 928 crap including the car, and find another hobby.
I've just had it with shops that promise they can deliver what you are looking for and then string you along and take your money and never deliver.
this is related to the hood, but follows the body shop fiasco from a few years ago, which follows my engine saga with two different shops..... this has all been over about 15 years.
why do people look you in the eye, and lie to you?
I'm just sick of it.
This in no way relates to any of our current 928 vendors.....

I found one in dirt bikes... no police out there to give tickets for speeding or no front plate, you can pretty much go as fast as you have the fortitude to twist the throttle. There is (in some areas) quite a bit less traffic to worry about. And the 928 will still be there when you have a hankering for precision engineering and speed.
