Because a journalist for ( IIRC) car and driver or road and track said it reminded him of a shark, when he reviewed way back when.

Default Land Shark, Land Yacht

Porsche 928 - Land Shark (fast looks like a shark, tucked in eyes/headlights pointy nose!!)

Old Cadillac's and Lincolns and Mercurys - Land Yachts (Huge, Luxurious, and powerful but not fast per se!)

Just a fun nickname!! IDK!

Because it looks like a shark with the lights down.
And if you see one coming up in your rear view you think you will be getting devoured.

Isn't the term land shark from the SNL skit from around the time when Jaws was big?

When I purchased the car, 24 years ago (1987 S4) I don't recall ever hearing it referred to as a shark. The appearance of the lights does sound like a good possibility.

I don't and would never call it a "Land shark" because I did in fact see that SNL when it first aired. I have however always thought of them as sharks...

Drop the "land" part and you are good to go...

BTW, some of the late 911 guys think their cars look like sharks too and refer to them as such, but I don't see it in those cars at all really...There is even a 911-centric parts supplier that uses "shark" in the name or some of the advertising for the company IIRC... I think I saw the ad either here on RL or in Pano...
