When I purchased the car, 24 years ago (1987 S4) I don't recall ever hearing it referred to as a shark. The appearance of the lights does sound like a good possibility.

I don't and would never call it a "Land shark" because I did in fact see that SNL when it first aired. I have however always thought of them as sharks...
Drop the "land" part and you are good to go...
BTW, some of the late 911 guys think their cars look like sharks too and refer to them as such, but I don't see it in those cars at all really...There is even a 911-centric parts supplier that uses "shark" in the name or some of the advertising for the company IIRC... I think I saw the ad either here on RL or in Pano...
