The Bosch hammer is be able to test, both the input signals, and drive links. So, with the hammer, you could try cycling the interior lights ON/OFF. See WSM Volume 6, page D90-9.

I re-installed the alarm control unit and checked the alarm system for faults using the hammer. This time it registered 5 faults in the system (knowing me, they were probably there the last time I checked, but I probably didn't enter the right menu):

Fault Summary
1. Door(s) when activating open
DTC: -15 -
2. Engine comp. when activating open
DTC: -16 -
3. Luggage comp when activating open
DTC: -17 -
4. Glove comp when activating open
DTC: -18 -
5. Input 1 when activating to ground
DTC: -21 -

The hammer then said "See diagnostic/test plan"...

I then went into the drive links menu using the hammer and attempted to activate the lights (with passenger door open and the lights in the "door contact position" (which I assume means auto). The hammer could not activate the lights, and returned the following message: "No response signal unplausible!"

I didn't check the doors using the input signals menu; will do so now and report back...

It sure feels like I'm making this harder than it should be (probably should have broken out the hammer several days ago). Sorry, thanks for your patience and your continued assistance.

The door input signals are functioning correctly for both doors, according to the hammer.

I cleared all of the alarm faults started and ran the car, then re-connected the tool; no more faults listed for the alarm or for the car in general.

Once more, I attempted to activate the lights using the hammer via the drive links menu. When I did so, I could hear a faint click in the alarm module under the passenger seat, but the courtesy lights didn't turn on, and again the hammer returned "No response signal unplausible!".

Without opening up the controller to look for obvious damage, you could try disconnecting & reconnecting the power to the controller by either (1) pulling fuse on the controller, (2) pulling the larger 15 pin plug, or (3) by temporarily disconnecting the 12 volt battery. Clearing the alarm faults may not be enough to get it to reboot.

Why do you think the alarm controller has its own fuse? None of the others do.

I'll disconnect the power to the controller in the morning (now that I've cleared the alarm faults), and see if that does it. I don't know if the controller has its own fuse, but there's some type of module between the two wire harness plugs (part # 928 618 263 00) on the back of the control module. I can't find a description for this part #, but it seems like it could hold a fuse...

The fuse 'S' is shown from the outside between the two plugs, in the diagnostics section...



And again in the wiring diagram, tied to constant +12 volts (30 Bus), through Plug L ..

Thanks. I need to just sit down and read the manual before posting such dumb questions. The Fuse (Part S) is the same thing I was referring to before (928 618 260 00). I'm now sure that has to be the problem. Will check this morning...

Checked the fuse on the alarm control unit (15A); its fine. Re-connected the controller. Still no courtesy lights but no faults either. Tried to turn on the interior lights again using the hammer and the drive links menu, returned the same error message as before: "No response signal unplausible!".

According to D90 - 10, error message # 3, the solution for my problem is to replace the control unit. Seems pretty definitive.

I'll let you know what happens when I install the replacement, currently one on its way from 928 Intl. I keep saying it, but I'm really grateful for all of the help...

Seems like it may just be the relay in the control unit - rather than get a whole new unit first might be worth opening it up and taking a look at the relay.

I already purchased a replacement used one, but it was very inexpensive so no problem. Once I have the unit successfully swapped out I'm up for taking the thing apart and replacing the internal relay if possible.

Just got home from vacation to find the replacement control unit waiting for me. Plugged it into the car and all is working perfectly. Then again, I was certain it would work given the diagnostic work done. Thanks to Alan and borland for all the help, and thanks to 928 Intl for a great price on the replacement part. At some point in the near future, I plan to take my old unit apart and replace the relay if possible, so I hope to have a good unit for the next guy who has this problem.

Removed the pc board of the old alarm control module from its protective metal housing this morning. The board has 6 surface mounted relays, all the same (Siemens v23072-c1061-a208). Replacing the bad relay is beyond my soldering capability, so unless someone wants to take a shot a replacing it, the control unit is just going to sit in my bin of junk parts. I'm happy to mail it to someone or somewhere to get it fixed if anyone has any ideas or suggestions. Thanks.
