Dead Tach comes to life..then dies again :(
Hi All,
In what I call a Thanksgiving miracle, my inop tach sprung to life during a drive yesterday, just to die again after stopping and restarting the car. Are the connectors in the spare tire well a good place to start, or is that just for the speedo (which is inop as well)?
Thanks
Craig

I'd check the black plastic terminal block above the jump start/hot post on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The solder has been known to fail on the connections in there...and I'm guessing a bit but the Tach could be one. It'll be closer than the spare tire well, in any event. The speedo is driven by a drive gear at the trans, the tach is driven by a signal from the ignition.

If both the speedometer and the odo are dead, the problem could be the connector in the spare tire well - takes fifteen minutes to clean the connector, mostly getting to it.
But - If the tach and speedometer are dead, the problem could well be that one of the connectors that hook to the flexible circuit board on the instrument cluster does not have good conductivity.
A little more trouble to pull the pod. If you decide to fix things, do some serious research, printing out the directions that you can find with search. Get some good contact enhancer and cleaner, such as Caig Labs DeoxIt or Stabilant before you start. Clean ALL of the connections in the pod, check all of the bulbs, etc. Clean the light block and reflector.
