Default The mass appeal of the 928. Is it regional?

Conversation was looking a little light today, so I thought I would do my best to "prime" the forum by starting a totally useless thread.

I am fairly new to the 928. Have owned 944\951 for years, and have owned mutliple other "muscle" cars.

The 928 has the uncanny ability to start a conversation\draw a crowd pretty everywhere I go. In the past month, I have probably drawn more favorable comments about the car than ALL of my previous cars combined. Without exaggeration, and without embellishment, it almost becomes a little annoying at times.

I hear comments ranging everywhere from "That was my dream car when I was a kid" to "I have never seen one up close", to "What is that thing?". I passed a few people that were walking up the road and heard a middle-aged guy blurt to his kids "That's a 928!". Then, there are the Tony Montana and Risky Business quips that peope throw out at the gas pump.

Now, I presently live in a rather socially DEAD region of the country. Northeast, Ohio isn't a real hot bed of culture and exotic cars. So, is this a regional thing, or do most of you find that 928 couldn't draw more attention if it was on fire? (Wait, I shouldn't say that). I am sure that the California\Miami owners probably get less fanfare, simply due to location, but the 928 does certainly hold the mystique of a Unicorn in my part of the country.

Would love to hear your stories, observations.

I went for a drive last week. A guy in a black Volkswagen pulled up next to me at a stoplight. He said ‘excuse me, but what model Porsche is that?’ I said it was a 928. He said it was really nice, and asked what year it was. I said a 1991. He said it looks like I have taken very good care of it, and then, with a surprised look on his face, he asked again what year, did I say 1991? I said yes, it's 20 years old! He said the design of the car has really held up well, it looks very modern. Just as the light turned green he said ‘V-8, right?’.

I think due to the rarity of these cars, people notice them more because you just don't see one every day. And Guardsredhammerhead, with a red color car, yours probably gets noticed more than most.

I barely get looks, though a few comments here and there. Is that a Ferrari, is it a 944? That has a V-6 right. Oh well, no love up here, though I get great compliments at the track from other P-Car drivers that they always wanted one or used to have one. Of the 150ish we bring to the track 2-3 stop to look and we get bewteen 2-3 928's at our events.

you are so right about people looking, staring, headtuning and asking about almost anything from "that's a V8" to "what year is it" from work, home and store. One day i parked at the seaplane terminal to pick up my wife, i stood nearby and i felt like i was at a car show, people look, walk around it, amazing! i just don't know why??

My GTS gets essentially no attention in Orange county. Well, once I got a lot of praise from a young guy at a gas station, but he then hit me up for $5 for gas so he could get home. I guess that counts as admiration (?)...

Very, very rare comments. Of course, being Grand Prix White almost makes the car invisible.

I live in South Jersey and I get comments all of the time. Thumbs up at traffic lights, what kind of car is it, etc. I was stopped at a light and the car next to me beeped her horn and blew me a kiss. Unfortunately she looked to be in her 80's!! Oh well, any port in the storm.

Any port in a storm? Now, that's funny.

Never heard of anyone buying a Shark to pick up GILF's.

Hey Black Tipped, where you at?

I'm in Point Pleasant.

My car is a DD and as such the people around town and especially on my street are used to it. I will say that when I go get my daughter from school and let her drive home we invariably get a thumbs up or someone will want to talk to us. That might be because my daughter is 18, I dunno.

She loves to drive it and I love to see her drive the 5-speed and run it up through the gears with a smile on her face.

Whenever I go anywhere that other cars are the focus someone will usually say something but there are quite a few exotics in my area so a 25+ y/o grey car isn't very eye catching most of the time.

Pictures, or it never happened. (of her driving the car, of course)

My 12 year old son is already counting down the days until he gets his Temp permit, cause he really thinks he will drive my car.

I let him fuel it up the other day, while I was in the convience store, and he thought he was THE MAN!

By the way, 25 year old Gray 928's are very eye-catching in my book. I sometimes wish I hadn't opted for the S4, and gotten a clean S3 or S2. I guess I will have to buy two!

Well, I see the OP has a Guards red car. That makes a big difference to your "visibilty".

My S2 is dark blue, and rarely gets looks or comments. I once drove a Guards red GT and was very aware of many looks it received in just a short drive.

I don't get much attention here in Va Beach... even in Coral Red.
