88, S4 RED racing look- Miami
(instake R&R, performance tuning done by Tampa928-on this forum)
Well I live in Fort Lauderdale actually and it is a hot bed of exotic cars ranging from Porsche Turbo's to Ferrari's and 400k Lamborgini's.
My S4 gets a ton of attention, it is extremely clean, MOMO all over the inside and 19" Porsche rims on the outside, modified exhaust. Even among all of the 100k plus cars I get "nice car" or thumbs up everyday. Also everyone tries to race me. When I park it in downtown Fort Lauderdale on the street I get a coffee and watch as people stop to look at it and look inside and smile.
I also get the uneducated that say "nice Ferrari"...I hear this so much I just gave up correcting them and say "thanks"...!
so even in bling bling North Miami my 928S4 gets a lot of love...it helps that in 7 years I have only ever seen another, a early model brown 928.
This car in Red or Black really stands out...

I get favorable comments from two distintly different camps. First the young import guys like it because it's just so different. A lot of them have never even seen a 928, much less look under the hood at something as "exotic" looking as the spider intake on a 16V. And they get a bit of a history lesson in such archaic technologies as "vacuum advance."
And then on the other hand I get a lot of thumbs up from domestic guys, kids in GTOs and FBody's because it's actually a V8 sports car, not just another 4-banger. Not knocking the 951s (since I hope to own one someday) but the concept of the 4-cyl turbo import just doesn't raise an eyebrow these days.
And its fun that they are just so rare. I really think they are probably the most under-valued car on the market - especially the 16V cars. The trick is just finding one that is well kept, but you get to own and drive something that has almost semi-exotic for less than the price of a used Hyundai.

Conversation was looking a little light today, so I thought I would do my best to "prime" the forum by starting a totally useless thread.
I am fairly new to the 928. Have owned 944\951 for years, and have owned mutliple other "muscle" cars.
The 928 has the uncanny ability to start a conversation\draw a crowd pretty everywhere I go. In the past month, I have probably drawn more favorable comments about the car than ALL of my previous cars combined. Without exaggeration, and without embellishment, it almost becomes a little annoying at times.
I hear comments ranging everywhere from "That was my dream car when I was a kid" to "I have never seen one up close", to "What is that thing?". I passed a few people that were walking up the road and heard a middle-aged guy blurt to his kids "That's a 928!". Then, there are the Tony Montana and Risky Business quips that peope throw out at the gas pump.
Now, I presently live in a rather socially DEAD region of the country. Northeast, Ohio isn't a real hot bed of culture and exotic cars. So, is this a regional thing, or do most of you find that 928 couldn't draw more attention if it was on fire? (Wait, I shouldn't say that). I am sure that the California\Miami owners probably get less fanfare, simply due to location, but the 928 does certainly hold the mystique of a Unicorn in my part of the country.
Would love to hear your stories, observations.

hahaha, ya I get the same. Its either the Older white guys that say 'Risky Business and make jokes about the U boat commander' or the black/latino guys that start with the 'Tony Montana' quotes.
Then there are the people that have no clue, but just like either the pop up lights or the V8.

Not to hijack your reply Rob but this is along those lines. I was in Minneapolis last January at a trade show. Guy and his wife(?) approach our group and he says" See what Im say, see what Im saying. Im like a chef man and I am stranded. Need some gas money to get going. Can you spare a dollar?" I looked at him and said "Did you say you were a chef?" He said "Yea Man, a chef". I replied "I don't care if you really are a chef or not, but to have the ***** to walk up and tell someone you are a chef earned you the dough." I gave him a 20 and told him to enjoy his cooking.
A chef, now that is original.

North NJ.
More attention in my OB then all the more expensive/newer cars I owned years ago. Thumbs up, honks, turned heads, pointing, etc. Young and old. I think it's because it's very old, very mint and a very unique color. I've owned an NSX, 840, 500SL, a few Vette's, a few 911's and Two S4's back in the 90's. Not really any attention at all in any of those. I'm guessing because they looked like just another current expensive car -- which there are plenty of in NJ.
Funny, the cheapest, oldest sports car I have ever owned get's by far the most attention. It's also my favorite by far.

Yeah, I haven't been able to bring myself to let any of my kids drive it without me riding shotgun. Just way too many things can go wrong and I was a teenager once. I know exACTly what I would have done with a car like that at 18 or 19.

Mike - just put the fear of God in them. My dad had a new at the time 1984 944 back when I was in highschool. And he let me take it out every so often. He kept it garaged and under a dust cover and it was his baby. I knew it would be my *** if I ever let anything happen to it under my care, so I was always really careful when I drove it, but it did help fuel my life-long love of these cars.

I've had three people give my 928 comments in all the time I've had the car, all of them white guys. Most would have been about 40 when the car first came out. One told me.. "we used to have one of those back in the day, we sold it when the tranny started making sounds". I thought to myself "wimp." ;-)

Must be the Guards Red. Mine's black and it's been ages since anyone noticed it except for today at the Napa in your town. A computer geek told me, "The 928S was the original supercar." I thanked him.

Absolutely
It always draws comments, "How much does one of those Lambo's cost?" "Nice car!". "What year?" "Cool car!" And I do love it.
Thumbs up at lights. Had a bunch of teenagers catch up to me once on the highway, kids hanging halfway out the window with big grins and thumbs up.
One thing that definitely made my day. Came out of a Wendys one time, just behind a very cute, very young girl, (-30 years on me), she stopped looked at the car, then at me and said "I love your car". Priceless.
At $7,500 plus what looks to be another 10,000 in repairs, maintenance, and upgrades, it seems to be worth it!
BTW, in Southern Ohio, in the past 6 months, I've seen two others. Not a lot around here
