Particle Board Spare Tire Cover
I suspect it would be impossible to find anyone who has a 78 spare tire cover that is made of particle board that wants to sell it.
As an alternative I would like to make a duplicate. But I do not have my old one. Anyone out there have one they can take a picture of. I am not sure how long Porsche used the particle board one. Even one that is broken with the hardware would be helpful.
Thanks much

Thanks, Stan, for the plug about my Spare Covers. I kind of have the feeling that maybe Dan has something else in mind for his.
Dan, I don't have any of the very early covers, but I think they may be basically flat. I am not sure when the covers started being formed with a little depth, but I am pretty sure that my formed covers with depth will fit any of the cars. At least I haven't heard anything to the contrary, and I am fairly sure that some have been installed in the early cars.
If I can help with your project in some way, let me know.

Dan, I have one in pretty good shape. It does have a hairline crack in it, but it's still in one piece. Looking now for donor car to swap this interior, and drivetrain into. Not sure if I want to sell this cover at this point in time. The garage where it is now stored is an hour north of me. I should be heading up that way in a week or so. Someone might chime in with another one ? https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...5spd-sold.html PM me your e-mail address if you are patient, and still interested. 77Tony

Dan, I've got one in the box, be glad to let you have it, if you pay the mailing costs. I can find out tomorrow. It's never been used.

If Dan doesn't take it, I will. My #6 car came with one, #1 car did not.
Jerry,
They do have shape to them.
Here'd the one from the #6 car:

Jim, the one I have is just flat black particle board, 1/4 inch thick. Doesn't look like the one in your picture.

Hi Jim. From the picture it is kind of hard to tell just how much form there is to your #6 cover. The most form appears to be at the center edge which is at the bottom of the picture where the light is reflecting differently along there about 3/4 inch wide, but I can't even tell if it is formed up or down. There is also some disruption from flat around the other edges, but I can't tell much about that either.
The circular indents in the mid area of the cover I have seen before and I think they are formed downward either to take up space on top of the spare or to provide stiffness or maybe to keep it from druming from road noise.

Jerry,
Thanks for the picture. That is the one I was referring to. It does not have the sticker though. I think mine had a gold sticker, but then again yours was a custom built car and not yet in production where some of the labeling requirements were probably more strict.
I was thinking if I could not find one I would try to make one out of a piece of partical board using a router and sander. I do not remember the latches being on the cover. My latch is on the car itself.
Thanks everyone - this really a great group.

Hi Dan. The picture of the cover from #6 car was from Jim Doerr, not me. However, the offer from Polecat looks to me like the way to go. That is certainly a generous offer. Post number 5.

I would point out that the one Jim is showing is significantly different from the shape of the ones I make. Aside from the "depth" aspect of these the shape of the perimeter is quite different. I wonder if Jim's is unique to the prototype/news media cars.

The one I have is just sitting in the garage. I bought one of Jerry's killer plastic ones, and his are way better than what came with the car. It fits perfect too.

Thanks Pole for your plug on my spare tire cover.
I was inspired to make these covers in 2006 when at the 06 OCIC someone had given some flat spare tire covers for door prizes at the awards banquet. I didn't win one, but thought that with the broken one I had in my first S4 I could simply make my own. Then I discovered that mine was formed and not flat. That's when I worked up the tooling to make the ones I have been supplying that are formed.
It may be that there is a lot to be said for the flat spare tire cover. I don't know when the factory made the transition, but likely when they changed the spare tire size; and that may have been with the S4. Nevertheless, my cover works well with the early cars even if their cover was originally basically flat. Mine are pretty strong so they can take a pretty good load even if the spare is a little bit below the cover.
However, if there is some interest in the flat cover I could make them and they would be substantially cheaper than the formed ones because it take me about 25 minutes to do the forming on each cover.
If Dan were interested in a flat cover in the same shape as the formed ones I could help out with that. I could even make him a pattern for the flat one if that is what he wants to make for himself out of 1/4 inch particle board. However, I have not heard anything from him about this or my prevuios offer of help; and I don't actually know just what it is he is trying to accomplish.
I am open to help if I can. I am not lookjng for the money that might be associated, just an opportunity to help out.
