On '78 MY factory though they would make only few automatics each year. So they started automatic engine number from 9001. On later years they knew automatic would be popular so they started them from 5001.

@Jim:
Aah, 100 for germany (or factory) makes sense. Because this austrian title is not
the regular document for serial cars, it's a "Einzelgenehmigung" for special cars.
The car came from germany to austria not over "Porsche Austria" as a normal import.
Because the first owner was Ferry himself, I think they took the car directly from the
factory to "Zell am See", the vacation-home of the Porsche-family near Gmünd in austria.
@Ron: I think I should have a straight talk with your wife. Because I know a seasonable
gift for your next birthday :-)

Based on what you wrote, less than 1000 autos were produced in 1978.
Total production for that year at 3860 assumes a maximum of around 25% autos, or less.
Based on my research, I suspected less than a majority were autos. Now I know it was much less than that.
To me, this is another reason the early cars are special, as the manual is more appealing and more were available that year, more than any other year I suspect.
Would be curious to know how 78 and 79 stack up against the other years combined.
As always, very insightful. Thank you.

Knowing some very late '78 MY automatic engine number would give some indication how many were made. PET has some indications in part change points. For example oil tube was changed on 5sp 818 1659 vs automatic 818 9281 and AC pulley on 5sp 818 1766 vs automatic 818 9379.

Ron, yes I mean the Porsche.
Car and driver with same "birthday" is ultrarare!
I think, if she really loves you... :-)
But...last 20 years when my wife asked me "what do you wish for your birthday?",
I told her "something from Zuffenhausen".
And last 20 years I got...some underwear. So I had to buy my 930, later my two 986
and now the 928 by myself. So what...

Otto,
Yes, Austin, TX baby!! We have a great little 928 group here in town! Had our meeting today actually. A friend of mine is in Grad school here and is a big fan of all things German and is a member of several associations here in town so I forwarded the info to him.
