Default Which weight motor oil for 16v 928S in norcal

I'm due for my first oil change since I got her in May. I'd love run her hard more often but I rarely have the the chance to push into the 4k rpm range. Besides, God damn CHP is everywhere! (Yeah, I got nailed with 68 mph speeding ticket in Marin 101N)
I searched throughout the forum but did not find anything norcal specific. 20-50 seems a bit too heavy for what I'm doing with her and some says to use 15-40 What are you guys using?

15W-50. I wouldn't put anything less than a 50 in a 928 unless you live somewhere where the temperature never exceeds 60 deg F.

928's need 20w50. The closest we get in synthetic is 15w50. All i use is Mobile 1 synth.

i just switched to 20w50 and no issues - no more valve tapping noise but i may go down to 15w50 next time because i am in the northwest.

Well, as in typical n00b fashion, it appears I did not search with the right terms. Using "lubrication" dug up this VERY informative post.
So it looks like the pollsters' consensus is in the neighborhood of xxw50 for us Left Coasters.
I just picked up 10 litres of
Motul 6100 15w50 at about $7 per litre Motul 6100 15w50 at about $7 per litre
.
BTW, is there any truth to the myth that synthetic oil will require one to get new gaskets? Even with no previous noticeable leaks?

15-50 is fine....since 20-50w is hard to find...... Since you live in the bay, temps are mild and we are coming into winter.....10-40 would be fine..... It all depends on how hard you drive and how hot your weather gets....

One thing you DO want is oil with a proper amount of zinc in it.....older engines like 928's need higher zinc levels to run properly.....many "new" oils have low levels due to stupid EPA standards.... the way around it is to buy "race" or "Diesel" oil......the standards don't apply to those
