Question Question About Interior Quarter Panels and Adding Component Speakers

When we first picked up this S4, we noticed that it had a 8-speaker sound system in it (well 4 speakers actually since the a-hole that had it before us ripped the entire original Blaupunkt system out and sold it). Some of the later cars had 10-speaker sound systems with tweeters integrated into the rear leather quarter panels, above the mid-range as part of a component system. Were these quarter panels an entirely different part number seeing that they had an extra hole for the component speaker setup just behind the seats?

I saw a set of component 6.5" speakers on ebay I was interested in picking up but my car doesn't have the additional tweeter hole. I wanted to maintain a somewhat original look by using the same type speaker covers to conceal the tweeter, but I have this feeling that my quarter panels are completely different than those with the 10-speaker option. Also, could someone please post a picture of their quarters with component speakers? Thanks in advance!

IMHO, the rear pair under the rear windows, is overhead..not serving a real useful purpose.

Thats IMHO. Theyre SO far away, they'll muddy up the sound..that much delay still matters.

Some ancient (12 year old) photos of my rear speakers (not counting the sub):

Speakers are long-since-discontinued MB Quart components (Referenz Premium PSC 316).

The speakers all the way in the back are useless. If you want to put in a set of components and need to cut a hole, then cut a hole. It's really not a big deal. If you want it closed up down the road, you'll just need some new coverings for the quarter panels which will probably be necessary at some point anyway.

I have some leftover R14 insulation from my bathroom remodel. I can shove some of that **** inside the interior, which should improve the bass as well in the quarter panel speakers.

My 90 GT had the 10 speaker setup. 4 in drivers with 1 in tweets in doors and rear quarters and 6.6 in woofer in side bolsters. I put in full range 4-1 Infinity components in doors and rear quarters and 6 in subs in quarters. Between the head and amps I added a surround sound processor. It sounded fantastic. I plan to do something similar with the GTS when doing the carputer thing.

Back when I had the 90GT JL Audio made a 6in sub but I can't find anything on it now. Kicker's international rep is in my local PCA. I talked to him about the 90GT setup and he claims they have speakers that fit that description including the shallow 6 in subs. I've not found them on their web site though.

If they do, I will switch to kicker then. I had huge issues on mounting depth for 5 1/4's in the front of my car and managed to create a shim to support the install. Now, I just want to fill that empty hole where the tweeter used to be.

Just wait a couple of months for Hans' full interior speaker offering. The most rear speakers on top of the quarter panels are as others have pointed out, poor noise makers at best. I paid to have mine removed and the holes filled in. Hans is currently testing new 6.5" speakers for the rear. He already has plug and play 4" which will fit in all the other locations in addition to his tuned tweeters. This will be a very nice drop in set of speakers for our cars.

I can't use 4" for the front. I did some holes in the actual door panel to accomodate a larger speaker. I would rather not expose the 'wholiness.'

These new speakers are so good I would wither think about making an adapter ring so they will fit or I would be getting a quote on some used door panels from 928 Int'l. Hans' speaker set up has been tuned specifically for our cars.
