Default 1988 and 1989 S4 Power seats stopped working

Seats stopped working on the 1988 S4. I think it is a connector. The manual seat adjustment is missing on the seat. Looks like it fell off at some point or something... anyone know another way to move the seat forward so that I can get the bolts out?

On my 1989 S4, I pulled the black plastic on the front of my seat to look at the wires. There are two wires that are clipped in so I sued my voltage meter to see of there was power across them and "poof" a little smoke and nothing works on that seat. I looked at the fuse panel (no seat fuse I could find), so I pulled all the fuses just to check them.. all are good.

I assume that it must be a relay or something that went (which is weird since I just connected to see if there was any voltage... if not there should have been nothing red, not a spark and blown something grrr). Anyhow, now I do not know what is blown... relay or is there another fuse located somewhere on the 89 S4?

Thank you for any help...

Assuming you have fore-aft electric, under the front edge of the seat there is a plastic cover. Offset to the right is a hole that goes thru the cover to a 'socket' in a drive gear. You can use a manual tool that came with the car or chuck in the right size of hex drive into an electric drill (but be careful). The gear has missing teeth to allow it to disengage when the motor is working. Some people have seen this and assumed the gear to be broken. As a result when you turn the gear it will seem to skip once per revolution.

If the seat is all the way back (or forward), you may find it jammed. This can occur if the rubber stops are flattened which allows the runner to go off the threads at the end, or if there is accumulated gunk. I had to manually turn the threaded rods on each side to break mine free.

There are many write ups about the manual movement of the seats. If your seat binds, the manual movement will just have you knocking teeth off the gear. I did it by mistake.

Loosen the front bolts first. Spray some electrical grease(?) in the switches and pray that it moves forward. That is how I got mine to move forward, back, up, down.

Sorry, I was not clear. The hex socket and the teethed gear is missing completely. The previous owner must have broken them and removed them for later replacment.... I am now in the hunt for gears and the hex receiver so that I can use it.

I did read all of the prior seat threads and found myself in a new situation unfortunatly...

On the 89, I was hoping there was another place for a fuse (no real details on the 89 out there and there is not a fuse in the fuse panel for the seats).....

Below is the shot of the seat where the gears should be

Fuse Position 20 and 21 are the 30A fuses for seat motors on NY 89

Hmmm... odd. Let me check tonight and see if I missed that. I hope it is just a defective user overlook.

Thank you

Yup, defective user. I must have overlooked that one when I checked them all (or not dee dee dee)... and the 89 is back up and working.

I am now convinced that the 88 has to be a connector under the seat. I picked up the manual socket insert and gear tonight and will ship it to Sac for installation ...
