Question What's this on the dash?

Does anyone know what this small thing on the instrument cluster is used for?

I recently changed all bulbs to LED and saw this, but I have no clue to what it is. (My car is a -89 GT euro)

Thanks.

Because of where it's located, I think it's your phototransistor for brightness control.

Thanks.
But it makes me wonder, since I have a manual control-wheel for brightness control under the dash, maybe this isn't used...

I believe it controls the brightness of the digital display only, not the entire pod.
