I think that they need to ditch the speed cameras.
The reason is that these will only be placed on freeways where the limits are already too low.
Instead monitor for traffic pacing each other, or have police patrol the highway for people who sit driving side by side for MILES. If you arent actively passing someone, get out of the fast lane.

2) Monitor, add police...those things cost a _fortune_..and nobody wants to PAY for what they want done.
So..im in favour of changing habits via financial impact.
It works.
Its currently working for me.

Most of them are put up by private companies from what I understand, they take a cut off of each ticket that gets paid to pay for the cameras.
So this may be a case of do it early if you are going to do it.

Two or three cars driving side by side for miles drives me through the roof. That's how people end up tailgating, to try to push one of the cars through, or trying to cut into an insanely small space to get through the road block. If people moved out of the left hand lane except to pass I'm sure there would a lot fewer accidents.

Drifting
Speed cameras exist to generate revenue for the state. They only change driving behaviors in the immediate proximity of the camera itself, and then it's back to business as usual.

Speeding by the driver generates revenue for the state...thats...you & me.
I may go push the rules later today, and if I get a ticket, you wont find me online complaining how the state ripped me off to generate revenue.

I got a red light ticket from one of these things, didn't think I did it until I saw the video of it happening. Thought about fighting it and would have been with in my rights to do so, but the fine was only $75.00. They count on people like me who will just pay the fine instead of fighting it. If I were to fight it, I know I would have won. But the cost of doing so would not have been worth it to me.

He is right though. This is the lazy way of revenue generation by the state. Just like stop light cameras. A private company gets 1/3rd of the revenue generated by the equipment, whereas the state gets 2/3rds. (numbers might be off a bit) The state doesn't have to pay a police force to get this $$. It's like a damn robot for traffic enforcement. There are several municipalities who have had these found to be unconstitutional since there is no way to face your accuser, which just happens to be a basic right we are given.

So..pick. Lazy, or obscenely high costs to put a cop at every corner.
Of course, this comes from public complaints over driver activity in the first place..which is where governments get the data they need to keep the electorate happy..to position law enforcement "properly". (Cant get re-elected with unhappy LOUD voters).
The answer..be a louder voter.
FWIW..I agree with you Sean. Just I see also the practical application by the government to the problem...and what it can and isnt allowed to afford to do about it.

Well, one thing's for sure the infrastructure / roads in the US are getting worse and worse. Lines aren't clearly marked or straight, roads aren't flat, lots of junk on the roads, etc. The re-treds on the semis are awful! Furthermore, the lack of car inspection also means that there are rolling hazards out there.
Having driven a lot in Europe I am underwhelmed by the poor driving skills in spite of the extremely high cost of drivers education. But, better infrastructure, maintained vehicles and the concept of a "fastlane" make things look better in Europe at first.
