Lightbulb Need more info on headlights

I posted a thread yesterday that asked about the best headlights so I don't run down all the big varmits here in Wyoming. The responses that resulted essentially favored H4 over H5.

OK guys, I need more education. The headlights on my '87 S4 have not been changed and I guess that means I have 9004 bulbs on my car (according to the Sylvania guide)

So what is H4 and H5. I've seen the adds on EBAY for the conversion units with the ballasts but I suspect there is more to it than that. Please educate me.

H4/H5 is the lens type.

What lights do you have?

lenses with trim rings?
lenses with H4 stamped in the middle of the glass
7", 8"

I suspect you are looking for an inexpensive upgrade on ebay... there isn't one - if you need bosch H4's - these will cost you well over $500 - the other option is to stick with what you have or consider 7" H4's at more like $200 (but with a chrome ring)...

Don't screw around with cheap ebay options (unless used H4's and they usually aren't cheap).
