Default Where is the leak?

I think others have had this problem so maybe someone has an idea.

Every time I get the car washed (high velocity jet wash) the stop light on the passenger side burns out. Obviously water is leaking into the housing thereby hitting the hot glass and causing it to break.I suspect it is a crack in the light housing (not the lense) but I have not been able to locate it. Anybody out there with the same problem and a solution?

Duh, stop using the high pressure wash pull the passenger side stop light ( and other) assembly, dry it out, replace with a good sealer around the assembly edge, and try again.

Sorry Neil:

This aint San Diego Charger country with swaying palm trees. This is Rocky Mountain country, elevation 8000 feet with pine trees swaying because of 100 mph blizzard winds and very muddy roads. You might be able to use kitten soft spray but more is needed when the car is caked with mud.

Seriously, I suspect that there is a fatigue crack somewhere in the housing and, since fatigue will usually show up in the same place for items of same design, I thought there might be someone out there who had the same experience. Obviously your San Diego kitten soft spray aint the answer.

Hi Mr. Merlin:

The car is a 1987 S4.

Which engine is in your plane? The Rolls Royce or the Allison?

Barney - 8000 feet trumps sea level!
I agree, fatigue crack sound likely, good luck with finding it.

That's funny because in many parts of California (or is it Arizona...) you cannot use water like that to hose down a car

You could try this:

remove the tool tray,
remove the finger nut on the tail light,
pull it out,
remove the harness,
then look along the top of the light housing above the brake lamp,
there will be a hole melted into the top.

The fix get some aluminized tape and put a piece on top of the housing,
also add one to the inside above the lamp do both rear lights .
clean the surfaces with some alcohol first.

Then take a thin piece of weather strip found at ACE
and wrap the edge of the light housing a few MMs back from the edge,
this will reduce the tendency for water to get into the light housing.
Slide it back into position

To Hacker-Pschorr

Born and raised in the UP. Green Bay Packers fan. Now living in Wyoming at 8000 foot elevation. Green Bay may be cold but you have to live here to know real winter. Not sure I couls use the no-rinse stuff here. Besides, I'm on a well. I'd hate to take a chance on my brand new paint job with the mud and ice we have around here.

The house my bro has in Idaho Falls had a garage large enough to wash in it.
