Cool 1987 928 S4 WP/TB parts supplier ?

Hey Guys,
I'm Erik, I just bought my first 928 S4 a/t . I had looked at many different car to buy after selling my Harely, and was going crazy trying to decide what to buy and them I came across this 97 s4 and I friggin fell in love with it the second I saw it. After a test drive and going over what issues the po said he knew about, I made him a offer alot lower then what he was asking. He slept on it and the next dat he agreed. So I own it, and I am looking forward to spending many hours wrenching on it. I just bought a set of manuals to assit and even more helpfull I'm sure, is the fact that I became a member here on Rennslist.

So here what I would like to ask... It has a coolant leak somewhere. So when I went to get my state inpection the machanic said that it was just a hose clamp that was loose and he tightened it, and pressure tested the system... He said it was good to go... NOT... it's leaking again, so I'm going to go at it myself. I put it away in the garage /shop to do the work over the winter. I figure I will replace, waterpump/ timing belt and rebuild tensioner first. Hopefully I will locate where the leak is comming from. What would be the best place to buy the parts all at once, from one vendor? or is that not a good idea? can I get better deals for diffirent parts at diffirent places?

Thanks

Roger @ 928sRUS.

I would check the flex plate and crank end play first, before driving it again (do a search for "Trust bearing failure". This is the right place to get info on maintaining your shark. You can almost find any info you need by just using the search function for the 928 forum.

Welcome to the tank.

Congrats on the purchase. Always good to see another local owner as well.

In addition to 928's R Us, there is 928 International, 928 Specialists, and 928 Motorsports. All four are Rennlist sponsors and active in this forum. Before diving into any work on the car, I would suggest searching through the archives here as there is a ton of information (pretty much anything you could possibly want to know). For detailed step by step instructions with pictures for some of the more common jobs, I would suggest checking out Tony's (http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/index.htm) and Dwayne's (http://dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/) web sites.

Welcome and good luck!

Welcome to the club. That looks like a very clean car.

A common source of coolant leaks are cracked tanks or bad seals on the radiator. A pressure test should help find it. You did not mention the mileage or what has been done to the car. Common on these cars are the timing belt that you already know of, the oil pan gasket, the motor mounts, most hoses on the engine and of course front seal. Unless these have been addressed it would make a great winter project.

On the rack pull back the right boot and look for oil leaking. The right seal on the rack is a common failure point and can be replaced in the car. The ball joint on the end of the tie rod also is a common wear point. Then there are CV joint boots, the rear hatch release and cleaning all the grounds. One other thing to get is some DeOxIt D5 and spray all the switches. Remove the sunroof head liner and clean and lube the cables. Do not forget to set the valve timing when doing the belt. Then there is also a top end refresh with powder coating the intakes and valve covers.

That should keep you busy for most of the winter. At least from experience this is what is wrong with most 928s that are in excellent shape on sale.

Have fun

PM a member here named Worf, or David Chamberlin, you will be hard pressed to find some one in that area, or any area for that matter that knows the 928 like Dave does, good people, great wrench who will guide you if he can.

You'll want to obtain a copy of Jim's CD's as well. I believe Roger has these and they have the manuals and a ton of other stuff that you'll find helpful. (Tech Bulletins etc.).
A copy of one of the versions of PET is also pretty much mandatory. (The Parts Book).
Exploded drawings are a godsend when you start reading the sometimes cryptic manuals.....

Congrats and welcome! There is a great group of 928 enthusiasts in the New England area, several on the South Shore. Keep an eye out for local get togethers once Spring is in the air. Nice looking car!

Haha!

Get the updated connection for the rear of the head that goes to the heater hose, too. It corrodes over time, especially when the wrong coolant is used. It will leak more when hot than cold, so it may be related to your "passing grade" from the shop.
