K .. Here goes. Am in the process of doing a TB and WP replacement on my 87 S4. I have only had this car for a few months and no idea when the PO had it serviced.. So to be safe I am doing the TB and associated other main stuff. btw Thanks be to Dwaynes writeups too. My question is that the Cam Gear teeth have no anodiziation left and are shiny shiny. The motor has about 260K (km) or for those metric conversion challenged 161K miles. From what I can gather the gears should be replaced.. Where can I get them at reasonable cost or second hand lower mileage ?
TIA everyone.
TIA everyone.

Why buy used ones, you have used ones all ready on the car.
There is not cheap gear, and used ones have been taken off for a reason, they go quick once the coating starts to let loose.
bit the bullet and get all four gears and do the whole repair right, which includes everything for the most part.

I agree with Greg, do it right.
Roger has the new gears; just bought a set. Change your crank and oil pump gears too... They're cheap compared to the cam gears. Be sure and buy, borrow or steal a PK32Vr to set the timing on the money.

Yah.. makes sense if the cams are worn the others have same mileage on them too.. Since its all apart may as well as do them all and check the oil pump and main seal. I am this far into it anyway. Funny how things snowball.. lol I did sort of expect this though. Now for the timing tool.. PK32Vr where is that animal found ?
May as well add to my ever growing collection of porsche tools.

Shiny they are worn.
Check your oil gear and main sprocket also...odds are they will need replacing also.
I replaced mine last time around..with a very low mile used set of a spare parts motor i had. (it paid for itself doing that)

Yak - you might consider at least recoating them if $800 is too steap. Finishlinecoatings.com in Oregon refinished a set for me for a very reasonable price (like $20/each). So long as the wear hasn't created sharp edges, meaning worn the magnesium under the coating, it's feasible to recoat the gears. YMMV

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

The PK32v'r is a bit confusing at first, but once the light goes on you see the brilliance in the design.
