Based on all these posts doesn't look good for finding a good used or new pumpkin for a '79 OB. I think I will pull if off this winter to see if I can have a good welder repair it.
Anyone know what mods would be required to fit a '78 to a '79 MY just in case I can't repair my original pumpkin?

I am also curious about both of these options. I'd also like to know if the 78 would look the same as the 79. Please document and post whichever route you take.

Not sure, but as long as you have solid metal on your old muffler then a good welder can pump some life back into the repair. Up here in Vermont there's Charlie's Garage in Morrisville, they do lots of Porsche and Mercedes work. Charlie's big on porsches. They have a welder there that does fantastic work. Earlier this summer my Pumpkin Muffler broke and I asked if the could just rig it until I found a replacement or help me make it until I put the car away for the winter and I had time to get a good deal. Well we took the exhaust down from the cat back and he cut and rewelded it so welland it is a clean job too ...it looks like I will have a nother couple years to go....but as he said its important to have good metal to weld to. That's the '79 only muffler the OP was looking for. I sure hope he (healey) gets first crack at it since he brought up the topic to begin with.

After reviewing all the pics (thanks to all who contributed), it appears the only major difference is what Dan (Podguy) pointed out.
The '78 mounts to the battery box via extension bracket, and the '79 does not.
The '79 appears to have an extention bracket as well, in the same place. However, it's not mounted to the battery box, and functions as another rear hanger location.

Now, I'm not sure if each Porsche muffler is supplied with it's respective bracket. But if so, that may explain the different P/N's.

It appears the 2-bolt mounts, where the extension bracket(s) mounts to the muffler, may be the same.

With that said, if the only difference is the extension bracket, and your bracket is intact.... then you may be able to use the '78 muffler for your '79, by swapping brackets.

How does that read with those with eyes on their pumpkins?

I am sorry. I bought the pumpkin from Chris. I need it for the 78 I am restoring back to factory original. But I do have an Anza that will fit the car - actually I think I have two each in different condition. The Anza will replace the pumpkin and give you a lightly deeper rumble. It is smaller and has built in tips - I think Chrome.

Did you find you could use a '79 pumpkin with a '78 rear bracket (the hanger mounted to the batt. box)?

Anybody else? '79 muffler may be ok for this project I'm working on.
