Great story... or maybe sad... I am not sure which, but I did enjoy reading it.

A doctor friend of mine (surgeon) bought a new 928 back in '83 or '84 and had the same experience you are talking about. She never had another 928 again, heck, maybe not even another Porsche...

We were told that the car already had a deposit and was not available for sale, at that point we decided we weren't going to leave without the car. Regardless, a deal was struck several hours later and we were off.

We took the car home that afternoon with the windows and the sunroof open, pulled up to the house and just then it started to rain. I hit the sunroof switch and nothing, hit the switch again and nothing. A quick look in the glove box revealed a small handle in a clear plastic bag which we quickly figured would manually close the roof. Not the best feeling in the world for the first trip in a new $50k car! It turned out that the switch was bad which caused the fuse to blow, believe it or not we replaced the switch and fuse several more times till we decided to stop using the sunroof altogether.

A couple of weeks after we purchased it, the car left us stranded several times due to some sort of alarm malady. You'd parkt the car and shut it off, come back and no matter what you did the car wouldn't turn over. The first time this happened we left the car parked in the fire lane in front of a carvel ice cream store in Smithtown NY, waited several hours for a ride, went home and then came back to meet the tow truck. On a lark we decided to try starting it again and viola, it fired right up. This was another issue the dealer never resolved.

The worst part of the first month of ownership wasn't the electrical gremlins but the fact that after being sold on the cars exclusivity, the rare interior and exterior colors and the fact that there were only 205 in the world, one of our neighbors about six blocks away showed up with the exact same car, rub strips and all!

It doesn't matter how a car becomes rare - whether attrition, as you say, or appreciation. The end result is the same.

My point is that all three claims you make about me are incorrect.

I am a selective buyer passing on and recommending the passing on all but the nicer 928's.

None of mine are "tweaked to driveable", they await finishing touches.

I would not enjoy them if they were "tweaked to driveable".

It does matter how a car becomes rare as its a bit useless for it to be rare if your car is one that dies off making the rest rare.

I'm very sorry if any of my posts gave the mistaken impression that I think a Weissach will have much of a premium vs a similar condition 1982. I don't see demand ever exceeding the supply. Too many Weissach owners are preserving them in hopes the value will someday rise, which defeats the normal mechanism that makes a car rare.

What a very interesting story. Thanks for sharing it. Another Weissach showing down the street would be a killer!

I would love to read other original buyer experience stories.

WyattsRide, that sounded like a great idea for a new thread, so I started it:

Should be interesting!

Here's 2 pics of Weissach #148 at the Parade in Savannah this summer. It looked brand new & won 1st in class. It was listed for sale in Panorama last month for $16,900, not listed this month, so perhaps it sold quickly. If you were looking for an as new Weissach, this might have been it. Can't remember what the mileage was. They drove it to the Parade from South Fla. Almost seemed it was too nice to be driving it hundreds of miles cross state.

I spoke briefly with the wife of the owner. IIRC, she mentioned they had purchased it in the recent past with the intent to resell. Not sure if it was the sound of it simply being an investment flip, or the 'not really a true 928 enthusiast' attitude, but something just didn't seem right to me. I only took the two pics, felt like they were going to ask to charge me if I took more. Perhaps I got the wrong impression. Or I showed myself to be one of those 928 enthusiast & not a Parade Judge or potential buyer!

Still, it was a very impressive 928 & Weissach, hope it went to a true 928 fan.

Oh, and I did mention to her the lack of luggage, which I don't believe she was aware of. And I told her to contact Roger Doger at 928sRus! Thinking it might have sold without it.

EDIT: I think this is my favorite sounding 928 in the world.
I've already told Dennis that I'd like first shot at his car IF he ever sells. The car is in great condition and I agree that the exhaust note is awesome

While that car looks clean, I can't see how it won anything with that dash and painted wheels.

I agree about the dash but the wheels look original and gold anodized as they should be.

The added wing is the killer!

No matter what this car is, or could be, that wing kills it!

They look to be painted nearly body color and down have the anodized look IMO.

Why does the for sale add state tiptonic for the tranny? These aren't tiptronics.
