Rent one for a weekend and see how it fits your needs.
As much as I love the 928, there's a certain practicality to a real sedan sometimes. I haven't driven any of the SLKs but would think It's a bit more roller skate than than touring car. Retractables have their merits for sure. Fair-skinned girl drive with the top down a lot?
Again, try one before you buy.

Nicole,
One of my Porsche chums has an AMG 55 ( and had an '89GT prior to several turbos and a 964 Speedster): it is a most capable car .... and from our mutual respect for the 928 platform, believe that had Porsche continued the 928 evolution, they would have arrived at the AMG 55.
At least worth a test drive ....

The AMG version is like an amusement park - if you approach a turn, it shifts down and has the right gear ready for you when you leave the turn. It's a blast to drive, but I would not want to maintain one.
The 280 is dull, but the 350 a great compromise.
Agreed on the tight interior space. And I don't need a convertible. And I want at least one car that's made in my home town.
But for some strange reason I love the SLK. Wish I had room for a third car - both in the garage and the budget.

Dollars spent vs driving experience......Like why my wife drives a Touareg instead of a Cayenne , and I have a Passat instead of an A-4.....If they reskin a premium car and it sells used for much less than the original because many people do not recognize what it is, it might be a good value
Plus I rather like the roof line of the coupe Crossfire as it reminds me of the Rambler AMC Marlins of the late 1960s And the folding metal "converts" seem like a nightmare waiting to happen with seven hydro cylinders and far to many moving parts.

The roof line of the Crossfire is definitely interesting, but not its square front (shudder).
Your Passat is not a re-skinned Audi (or vice versa), even if they might share some components. They are based on two separate platforms.

Looks like around $500 to $600 for a weekend, a week might be better to really know, but aren't we talking an amount to own that would make a 928 a drop in the bucket?

Ok, Ill offer a different side (albeit possibly a smidge masogonistic)
I see a lot of these in my neighborhood. Bentleys,AMs, and maseratis aren't uncommon here, nothing has impressed me more than seeing Rosa (Tims Wife) out on 620 one day. It speaks volumes to the character of the driver. The newer cars lack the soul poured into them in days gone by, (esp Mercedes,) and scream of herd mentality.

^^^ I'll second that. I've never met you, Nicole, or know your relationship status, BUT a chick driving a 928 is hot. Same with old jags, mustangs, camaros, etc. It's like a tractor beam...

I was thinking the same thing. The SRT version shoud be a blast. Saw an SLK this mornign and didnt' impress me at all. The lines of the body are just too soft and whimpy. Now on the other hand, the new Audi TT S-line looked very nice.
