Perforated door cover delete speaker options?

My 79 perforated door vinyl is faded and it is time to replace.
Still has original speakers and trying to replicate the perforations seems way too tedious.
Has anyone replaced door vinyl and gone with a surface mount speaker solution in an OB door card?
Interested in what size and type speaker you used and pic's!
Later cars with the surface mount speakers have recessed areas for the speakers. I assume I could get a similar look by cutting a hole in the door card for the new speakers and snugging the surface mount speaker to compress the foam behind the vinyl.
Anyone opted for deleting the upper speaker and installing a speaker lower in the door, i.e. carpeted part?
Thanks

I have contemplated some of your ideas and have come to the conclusion that picking up late door cards is the best option. My MY80 has modified early cards with a surface mounted speaker. I think they did a good job with it, but it just does not work-it looks out of place/non-factory.
As the late door cards are factory, they fit perfectly, they hold better speakers and by the time you figure out a better solution for the early door cards, you will have spent about as much as picking up a good used set of late cards. Also, there is a good chance any mod you come up with will not look as good as the factory set-up.

Anyone had the vinyl off a later car door to see how the factory acheived the recessed speaker area?

Hans and I have been working on updated speakers that will fit behind the stock door card without any modifications.
Some people may choose to cut away some of the cardboard / wood to allow more sound through. This will not be noticeable from the outside.
These speakers will be based on the same ones he's designing for the later cars, just in a different configuration to fit the early panel.

The perforations are still the challenge when replacing the OEM vinyl as in my case. Some have suggested just mounting the speakers behind the vinyl. Seems like that would result in a significant reduction in sound.
