Wrenching on my 928S
The car has now been on stands since the beginning of August when I took out the gearbox.
The 'to-do' list has now got longer and longer and has turned into a minor restoration - it's all part of this 'while I'm at it' syndrome.
The box is now ready to go back in, having been sent for a check-up. Bear in mind that the car has 450 000 odd kilometers and all it needed was a seal kit, four reverse clutches and a new filter. Very impressive! The gearbox mountings have been renewed - the one was totally stuffed, and the other was starting to crack. I have also renewed the modulating pressure valve, which was leaking. I'm sure the gear changes are going to be a lot better now.
The drive shaft joints on the gearbox side have been renewed, and new boots fitted to the wheel side - I'm hoping that it was the dry joints that caused the whine at 60km/h. (At 180km/h the whine would probably be coming from the passenger seat.)
The new shocks have now arrived and need to be collected from Porsche. The ball joints on the top wish bones have been checked out and new boots fitted.
When the fuel tank was filled to capacity, there was a fuel leak, so I have removed the fuel tank to find out what the problem might be. I'll get the tank pressure tested, and then renew all the hoses. The fuel pump (and fuel filter) will be renewed - the fuel pump was becoming quite noisy.
The front spoiler and grill have been removed and will be fixed or renewed - depends on what they cost.
The rims were sent for anodising, which was not successful, so I have had them painted and will fit new tyres.
I've decided to get the car together and then send it to a specialist to get the new engine mountings fitted - I have to free up the space to start my new racing car project.
Other things to do:
1) Front & rear bumpers need to be sprayed and new decals fitted.
2) Windscreen needs replacing
3) Vaccuum system needs to be sorted to fix heater and air flow
4) Interior needs to be re-trimmed
5) Odometer and Tripmeter need to be fixed
6) Kick-down function needs to be repaired
