What's it worth, 91 GT
A co-worker has 1991 GT that he wants to sell. It's black on black and from the pictures I've seen the body looks nice. It runs. The under-tray is missing. The nose and chin spoiler are off, but the parts are there. He is going to Sharktoberfest to try and sell it but is not sure what it is worth. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations?

Exposing a car for sale at Sharktoberfest is a mixed blessing. There's always the chance that someone is looking for another car. But the educated and experienced owner will also see a list of what the car needs, and have the ability to walk inside an find out what it will cost to make it look like the show-prep'd example in the next parking slot. Unless it's a steal, it will most likely go home with the owner.
Suggestion: Put all the parts you have back on, so it looks complete. A garage full of parts that have been removed looks just like a garage full of parts that have fallen off. One yells 'project car' louder than the other, but both say it loudly. Make the car as presentable as possible, and solicit offers. Owner doesn't need to accept anything, but can gauge the feelings of other current owners.
I'm not sure how I would offer my own car for sale here. For sure there are some that appreciate the value of an ultra-well-maintained car, but it seems more and more like cars offered here get ripped apart for every little thing that doesn't match some individuals' perception of what a perfect car should be. Mine would probably end up on ebay, with lots of pictures and history, a reasonable reserve, and a reference here so folks could link directly to the sale site.
Stopped for gas on Saturday evening, I was approached by a well-dressed man from a car nearby at the station. He complimented on how the car looked, and asked if it was for sale. Everything is for sale. He laughed a bit at that, and he started with a number that was way high. My turn to laugh and let him know that nice examples are available for a lot less. He really wanted a perfect car to be seen in, not any kind of a project at all. He took my phone number, but nothing since. I consider how much (or little) I drive my cars, and selling this means I would need to spend on a newer car to replace this one. More than what he had in mind. So I still have it.

Nicole, are you going to be at Sharktoberfest? I'm not sure if I'll be there or not. I have to work till noon on Saturday.

Hi Ron
I think you have to differentiate here.
If a car is known within the Rennlist communitiy, I personally have lots more faith in buying it. I bought my GT basically on infos about the car via Rennlist people. The car was known and people had seen it and talked about it.
If the car is not known here, it does indeed look difficult to sell here. And there does seem to be lots of (often justified) criticism. On eBay you are just hoping that somebody who can't judge the value will pay a higher price. I personally avoid eBay.
In sum, I think keeping a presence in the 928 communitiy is good value protecton for your vehicle.
Just my 2 cetns,
JP

Sharktoberfest, really any of the enthusiast get togethers, can be a good place to offer either a very nice car or a very cheap one, but I think a waste of time except for the fun of attending for anything in between.
I think thats basically true of the forums as well, really nice or really cheap.

More than just a presence, I'd modify that statement to add to the type of presence.
Be inquisitive - asking questions leads to answers which may help you maintain your car.
Follow up - close open issues with your car. Let people know the resolution; was their advice helpful? Where did you find the answer?
Contribute - adding value back in the community.
Just being "on Rennlist" doesn't ensure a properly maintained vehicle.

Jim, I would say it's kind of what I meant. If you're on Rennlist you are probably doing those things.
Actually, I don't think Rennlist is particularly special in this sense. I'm in several online communities
If and when you want to buy/sell something, you get better results if you are "a known variable."

Fwiw, a '91 GT with 68k miles just sold at a dealer auction in Vegas (not BJ) for $13,800. Cosmetics were decent, but not great for that mileage. Guards red; Maintenance was unknown. The dealer paid $9500 for the car as a trade in.

I don't agree altogether.
