My passenger side (outside) mirror is shaky. It seems to be firmly attached but vibrates with the roughness of the pavement. The electrical control works ok. How to get rid of the shake without breaking the mirror?
my mirror popped off recently.
there is a big spring and washer inside.
when I repaired it I could not compress the spring enough with the washer in place.
As a result my mirror is a bit shaky as well.
It is a bit involved to remove the mirror, but not impossible.
Perhaps a new spring and re-attatching propoerly with the washer.
If it is just the mirror glass that is loose, the mirror housing may be firmly attached to the door but the mirror glass may be separated or separating from the adjuster motor arms. If you can adjust the mirror so it points full inward, you should be able to peak behind the glass and see what I am talking about. There is a round locking ring that rotates to lock a plastic ring that is glued on the back of the mirror glass to the adjuster mechanism. The mechanism has a few delicate plastic arms that can break or pop out at the ends. Anyway, you can move the lock ring and release the glass and examine all the pieces parts. If there are broken arms, you can replace the entire adjuster motor once the glass is off. It may be the lock ring is just not in the fully locked position. Have fun.
It could be what Bill mentioned or that the glue that bonds the mirror to the plastic base has dried and separated from old age. I had a similar issue with a 944 mirror.
This is exactly the issue I had on my 84 and 86.5. It is likely just the glass coming loose from the plastic base. Do yourself a favor and remove the glass now and re-glue it. If it falls off and breaks, you'll wish you had. I used Gorilla glue - worked perfectly and glass never came loose again. Not too much needed, and masking tape to hold glass onto base until it dried. Total fix cost was less than a buck and time less than 15 mins.

In my experience with the "shaky mirror", it means two things - the glass itself is loose and about to fall off or the plate the glass is glued to is not latched correctly (the plastic ring that holds the plate to the mirror housing has turned). If the latter is the case, eventually the plate will separate and dangle by the two wires used for defrosting the mirror.
I say this because my driver-side mirror was basically held on by tape for a short time (until we finally got the screw through the spring to catch) and the glass was still not "shaky".
I also have one of the adjuster arms broken inside the mirror housing (luckily, my mirror needs to be adjusted all the way right for me, so that particular arm is not used) and the mirror still is not shaky.
My passenger side mirror shakes but it is the entire "flag" shaking. The mirror as a whole is mounted firm to the door and the glass is mounted firm. I removed the mirror assembly and saw a broken plastic/rubber ring underneath.
If you experience this type of loose shaky situation
You will need to remove the entire mirror from the car.
Carefully as mentioned above remove the glass from the inside plate.
Unplug the stud connections for the heating element
Unbolt (10mm thinwall deep socket three bolts) the mirror motor plate from the flag section This includes the black plastic flexible surround
Unplug the white 6 pin connector from vehicle
Now move mirror out away from the car to reveal the 4mm hex bolt that holds the base to the door.
I have read here that some have experienced the part this bolt threads into will drop to the bottom of the door shell.Mine did not.
With this bolt out hold the base and rotatethe flagclockwise 1 turn.If that tightens the wobbly situation great.
If not unscrew the flag from the base 3 phillips screws
Now you will need to use a specail pin removal tool to push the wires out of the white plug. Note the colour positions
Now slide the wires out of the mirror base
With the two part base (ie swivel assy) now take a t-55 torx bit and and tighten to 2 or 3 ft lbs or more
Resist the urge to rotate counterclockwise as you will then need to compress the spring while you turn the bolt.
