Leeroy. Unless that unit had been rebuilt, it has over 200k and the car shifts wonderfully as I recall. The Porsche synchros are fine and are very serviceable. The clutch adjustment requirements were stupid.

I'll
Check back with you 100k from now!

What about the vast majority of others that do not have any issues that are on the road every day? Can anyone show an early original transmission with over 100k miles that does not need 1st and/or 2nd gear syncros? Anyone? How about 150k miles? 200k?

Well my 2nd 81 928, G28/05 with 172K was a grinder, and after the rebuild it was a little better but was horrid. The next G28/08 was okay but at 100K 2nd was getting notchy and required throttle float to make it nice. My G28/13 is/was completely solid until it started peeing oil out the front seal and the potential input shaft bearing noise. After the noise started, 2nd began to have a little notch but not bad and not float needed. The newly found G28/12 @ 100K miles appears to have had a very hard life. In my opinion it needs R,1,2,3 replaced as they don't shift clean at high rpms or if you are slightly moving coming to a stop and searching for 1st.

Now in my first 81 928, the G28/05 exploded on the road, and a rebuilt one I found was super tight and was wonderful.

Of the lot of the early porsche syncro's, I would have to say the G28/08 was the best.

Wow, that must be a special one in Leeroy. I didn't think there would be a single one over 200k miles that shifts well. But it is interesting that due to differing lubrication methods, the Porsche synchros are more durable in racing environments. I wonder why Mark Anderson doesn't use an early transmission then? Not beefy enough internals for the power that car puts down?

I plan on checking back if I still have the car, that will be at 340k miles That will be another 8 years though since I put ~12k miles per year on the car. Oh, and I have retrofitted a DD clutch in too.

I also think that a lot of "sportscar" drivers like downshifting and using engine braking to slow down instead of simply using the brakes....because it sounds neat ! That works the syncros clutch and transmission a lot more than simply sliding the gear lever into neutral and waiting to depress the clutch and shift into first when the light changes...just holding the clutch pedal down is abusive to the release bearing, pressure plate spring fingers, and crank thrust bearing surfaces.
Greg has pointed out how big a factor DRIVER input can be to shorten the life of these parts but I know that some drivers can get very long service because of how they drive....
