Default The enigma that is the 6.5" rear speakers.....

Well, thanks to Maleficio, Alan, dr. bob and others, I finally got a new stereo up and running in the 1989 10-speaker S4.

Now, I want to make it bigger and better. Well, not that big - I just want a nice tight bass to balance out the sound.

First thing I did wrong was buy an Alpine 125BT - turns out, down the road one can't do a whole lot with a deck that only has one set of RCA pre-outs.

.....so, I am currently waiting for my Pioneer DEH p6000ub (3-year-old model) to arrive. It has front/rear and sub RCA outs....and they are 4 volts vs the regular 2 volts you usually see.

Now....I think I have the smaller 4"/tweeter covered as far as getting new ones/replacement, etc.

My big question mark is the 6.5" rear speakers.....

As of right now, I have the factory 6.5's wired directly to the deck and they seem to be allowing all highs and lows through....functioning basically as a speaker. The bass is ok, but if you turn up the deck at all, they snap, crackle and pop. They may need to be re-foamed, but still....

Are the originals 6.5"'s "woofers" or are they a 2-way speaker?
Does that lil' tweeter next to them run with them or off of the 4" in the rear?

I plan on getting a 4 or 5-channel amp, but for now, I want to put something new in the spot where the 6.5" go...........

1. Do I just go out and get a 6.5" "speaker" and use them for mid-range and get a subwoofer for the bass?

2. Do I put 6.5" pure subwoofers in there?

I am looking at these....

...or something like this......

Which is my best bet? Go with a "speaker" or a "subwoofer"? Anyone put 6.5" pure subwoofers in that location; and if so, how was the amount of bass you achieved?

When a stereo pro did the speaker system in my 90GT they put in Infinity 4" speaker and 1 in tweeter component sets in the stock door and rear deck locations with their crossovers to run as front and rear pairs. In the 6-1/2 side bolster locations they built up a custom ring to mount JL 6in subwoofers. The car already had a 4 channel and a 2 channel amp to run all the speakers with an amp for each channel. The sub out came from a Rockford Fosgate surround sound processor that did surround from the front and rear stereo outputs from the head unit. That let the balance and front/rear controls work. The system sounded absolutely fantastic!

I hope to do something similar when I get around to putting in the Hans Car Computer setup.

I think a couple 6.5" subs will be pretty good for bass.....but I just wasn't sure. That will solve my issue as to where to put subs.

I could put the amp(s) in the spare tire hole.

With that set-up, I will defiantly need those three pre-amp outs.

I've looked at the Sharkwoofer, but I'm trying to avoid filling up the spare tire area completely. Perhaps put some amps there.....

Currently looking into this 6.5" subwoofer to put where the stock 6.5" are...

CDT HD6+

The M6+ (cast alloy red frame) has a more massive voice coil than typical bass/midrange and leans toward the bass in the sound compared to the standard high-end mid drivers. The upper midrange is somewhat mellower than standard high-end mids which creates a very very smooth and balanced non-fatiguing sound with an extension in the bass region never heard of before from a 6.5 mid driver.
