Default viscous clutch fan?

My friend and I were talking about our fans and both mine (1981) and his (1985 928) do not freely spin therefore he said they have failed.

They should freely spin he says which I recognize, so, is this true for the 928? I imagine so but did not find the title in searches (I lied - I just found some using just "clutch fan"). Does it matter other than the loose of MPG's?

When you spin it by hand and if they spin more than 3/4 of a turn, they are not good.

I should have been more clear - cannot hand spin at all in either direction. Runs all the time.....so based on your input...???? what do you think?

You can't spin it at all, even a little? Then maybe it was pinned, so it will work faster than normal. It is never supposed to spin any faster above ~3,000RPM in stock configuration so it's not a very good idea to pin them. A properly working fan should not spin freely, but when you push it by hand should not turn more than a full revolution.

Rule of thumb is they can't be checked by hand and certainly not by eye.
I have three that passed the hand rotation test above, but needed filling.

If it warms in traffic, then cools in while at highway speeds, it probably needs to be refilled.

Easy to do, just do it.

Mark, I agree with Dan, and the others .. on each of my cars at best they will turn 1/2 rev by hand, and they maintain the correct temperature. If it is pinned that is not good, as Dan says, they shouldn't be spinning faster than around 3k RPM, so there is a risk ( but i have never heard of it happening) that it may have a catastrophic failure!

They can spin less than a turn and need refilling.

I am starting the 5 things that need to be fixed / replaced starting tomorrow after work.

Organized my garage for somewhat better working area.

Hope to complete by Sharktoberfestest in Anaheiminwieser.

- AFM seal
- aux. air valve removal and plug with genuine Porsche plugs or replace
- heater valve just replace with manual on-off due to the entire inside HVAC system is buggered up.
- collat bottle and cap replacement (highly likely)
- look for other stuff
- inside fender wells

Ready, Set - have a beer or 2

That's not true, but the method is a bit dangerous so I don't recommend it.

Handheld tachometer & thermometer?

Make it easy. If the car doesn't heat up, leave fan alone.

I followed Chris's method. It heated up in traffic, and passed the hand test when warmed up.

2 bottles of oil, and a heat gun.

Works everytime now and cools properly.

All in all, the fan clutch rebuild costed me $21.00

Dooooo it. LOL.

Does not work every time

I did a refill and after the first run it slung a good portion out, everywhere of course and then continued to leak static. $30 dual Merc Mystique fans and $42 Hayden dual fan controller and issue is under control.
