1989 S4 Power Loss
I was driving up I 17 toward Flagstaff AZ this past weekend and something I cannot explain happened.
There was a loud “wind” like noise that came from the Auto Tran shift area and then I lost power. I was peddle on the flour and I was losing speed, almost like bogging down, with nothing I could do but pull over.
There were no warning lights, no indicators and when I popped the hood there was nothing.
I turned the car off, cranked it back up and no issue since.
Mechanical issues are not intermittent so it would have had to been something electrical, but I have no idea what or how to diagnose this one.
Anyone ever have this happen?
If not electrical, fuel restriction? I do have the new 044 with filter setup I plan on installing soon (maybe this weekend).

While it may not explain the problem, the first thing that I would do would be to check the transmission fluid level. I would also change the fluid (disconnect cooler line, pump fluid out, change filter, add fluid, pump fluid out, add fluid, pump fluid out, reconnect line, fill to proper level) to Dexron VI.

I had a bad coil once that would act up occasionally (especially when it was damp outside).
When it did act up, I would lose power when the throttle was opened more than about 1/4.
The car would idle just fine, problem occurred just under load.
The engine would get a wierd airy sound when it happened ... hard to explain.
I replaced both coils (about 3 years ago) and haven't had the issue since.
