Beautiful job. It appears from research that the difference in the 78 is in the cross member. Porsche made the drive shaft shorter for the 78 to compensate for the mounting of the external battery box. The external battery box was replaced in 79 with one molded into the body. Yet it appeared Porsche had over ordered the shorter torque tubes and continue use them in 79 and maybe as late as mid 1980. The longer torque tube can be used in the 79-80 cars with the right cross member.
I have checked the transmission case from a 78 and it is the same as the later transmissions. Thus longer torque tubes can be used in the 79 cars by changing the cross member. Unfortunate - and I have not checked this - but if you have a 78 you are probably stuck using the shorter set up. I have put a 79 transmission, torque tube and cross member in and 82 with no problem.
