Default Rear Quarter Window Removal

I've done a search without luck... looking for the proper way of removing the rear quarter windows. Thanks!

Bill, when you're ready to reinstal, I have a tool I made years ago for the beading install you would find useful, you are welcome to borrow.

Removal:
Pull metal corners
Pull beading (the hard plastic in the rubber)
Push window out. Make sure to have someone grab it

"It is easy to get the window out. Home Depot sells some plastic shims for installing flooring. The ones I have are green and have two thicknesses. Take a screwdriver and slip it down the edge of the gasket on the out side. In the inside push up the gasket until it is above the lip on the car. Pry on the window moving it out and then use one of the plastic shims to hold the window out. Move over an inch and do the same thing. Just be careful not to pry on the edge of the glass. I usually start in the corner and work along the bottom. Even if the gasket is glued in it will come out this way and save the expense of a new window or gasket. When putting the window back in put some clear silicon on the lower part of the glass in the grove of the gasket and let it dry. Then use some 3M window sealer on the gasket to the chassis. The silicon is needed because the window can leak between the gasket and the glass. Since so water pools at the top it is only neccessary to use the silicon on the bottom part of the window. A string inserted in the grove of the gasket will allow you to put the window back in easily. Just push on the glass and then pull the string to pull the lip into the groove in the gasket.

You can use the plastic shims to protect the paint by inserting one between the glass and gasket and then use a screw driver to pry on the gasket. I assume in your case it does not matter much as you will probably repaint the panel any way. Spoting can be done with the new two part paints but it takes someone with more talent than I have to do a convincing job.

None of this is hard - just time consumming. Any competent body shop can handle such a repair. If you see rust by the window there is a very good chance there is rust on the rear deck under the spoiler. Best bet is to remove it. The drain channels get plugged up with dirt over time and cause water to sit and destroy the paint."

Gotta turn in my man card for this one!

I see a couple procedures on the list. But after messing around with them yesterday, it seems the rear quarter trim should be out to allow access (especially to the forward and rear corners). And none of it looks easy.

I think best to take her to a body shop and have it done.

Am I being a wimp?

Remove the window trim carefully so that you don't bend it. That will make window removal easier. The quarter windows are easy to remove once you've done it once. I can remove them in less than 5 minutes per side now that I've done it a couple times. Don't be scared of breaking the window, they are pretty tough and they are fairly cheap to replace. It's the seals that cost a fortune.

Be sure to install the trim in the window seal before you reinstall the window. It must be done this way. I had to do mine twice because I didn't know this.

That's why I'm doing it! Trim is out/window in.

I'll take a deep breath and give it another go.

Fabio, which method do you use?

I see the cord method to ease the inside lip of the seal over the window metal frame and out.

Hey folks - blowing the dust off this thread. Got a bit of corrosion I'm going to have taken out at the bottom of the LH quarter window on my RHD '91S4 (with rear spoiler). As the corrosion goes right up to the metal seal on the exterior, the window will have to come out. In anticipation of this would it be prudent to order the outer metal trim, along with the window gasket (given she's 27 years old)? Thanks.

The long straight pieces of your quarter window trim are metal, not plastic? The corners are all metal. Unless someone's had the window out before and felt the need to goop it back in place, you ought to be able to get the window and its seal out so that the rubber seal is re-usable. If you need to replace the window trim pieces, the ones Porsche will sell you now are plastic that may not match the corners if they're faded.
