Must'a been a deep one..felt it here in Spruce Pine, NC too. When you are in an underground concrete bunker and your chair starts rocking and mirrors rattle for almost 30 sec...it gets your attention.
Thor felt it first and starting barking, which is very unusual. Thought there was a big mining explosion or something because NOTHING shakes my "house".
First one I felt in NC since the 70s...

Shark is OK. Knocked over a couple small items, nothing broken. Cell and land line out for about 20 minutes.
Hurricane expected later this week. Guess the only thing missing to make it a weather grand slam is a volcano.

Everyone's talking about whether or not the Washington Monument is tilting and whether or not spires have fallen off the National Cathedral.
I'm thinking more about the North Anna Nuclear Power Plant that's right on Lake Anna a few miles from the epicenter..because we're going water skiing there tomorrow.
I assume those reactors are built to withstand this kind of stuff.

A nuclear power plant in central Virginia has lost offsite power in the wake of a 5.9 earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., U.S. nuclear officials said.
The North Anna Power Station, which has two nuclear reactors, is now using four diesel generators to maintain cooling operations. The plant automatically shut down in the wake of the earthquake.
"As far as we know, everything is safe," said Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman David McIntyre.
There are seven additional nuclear plants that have declared unusual events, which is the lowest of four emergency situations, the NRC said.
Those plants are located in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
But at least the generators will not be drown in a tsunami from Lake Anna

Yep, my Cleveland office, NJ office and Toronto offices all felt it a short time after we felt her outside of DC. I could hear them on a conf call in the office next to me when the office mate ran out of his office leaving his door open and the conf call on speaker.

One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded on the U.S. East Coast sent shocks waves far from its Virginia epicentre on Tuesday, rattling residents all over the Eastern Seaboard and Canada.
The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 5.8. It was centred near Mineral, Va., about 135 kilometres southwest of Washington, D.C. After several revisions, the U.S.G.S. placed the quake's depth at six kilometres.

I was stopped at a light and felt something. I thought the 928 just had a rough idle. I pulled in to the bakery and everyone was standing outside. Having spent my first 39 years in SoCal, I can appreciate a good shake, from afar. It's one reason I left for Virginia.

I've now assessed the damage around here. Turns out that there was one casualty:
Humpty Dumpty took a great fall.
His normal perch is on my son's shelf with his legs dangling over the edge.
Humpty never was too careful. Kind of ironic.

Very funny My point was related to a common phenomena of people only "feeling" an earthquake after an announcement is made, particularly when they are weak, which it would have been all the way in Ohio. Her saying something before it was widely known means (to me) that she really felt it.
