Son took about 15 minutes this evening and scanned the rear quarter panel of a car in the basement. When time is available he'll do the whole car. And maybe some key subcomponents. This gear has multiple decimal point accuracy. These are just some very rough shells from those scans.
This method for collection of point-cloud data is a reverse engineering game-changer.
Mind-blowing, really. This complex fender is mapped in 3d space with a few dozen swipes of the scan head.
Its possible to establish a datum, move the tripod, and attack the next body panel.
The software iterates to combine the surfaces in best-fit.
(See the little divots at the lower edge of the window hole --- those are places I sanded the rust spots to metal using a 4 inch grinder w/flapper paper. They reflect a bit. So, would need to powder them with talc to improve the scan. Just a tweak.)
Provides a vastly superior data set / mesh for the use of a skilled (3D design software) expert to convert to machining language for making cut parts or molds. (Actually, the software with this package allows smoothing and outputs full CAD dimensioned parts)
Can't wait to attack the dashboard and pod. And phone dials. And inner quarter trim...

Just messing around. But think of the possibilities!
I think inner door handles and front grill sections need to be high on the list though.

Son and DIL have jobs the require them to be experts in the use of this gear, and the spinner version used to map spaces (it might be better for the car scan).
I've never seen anything like it.
Jay Leno did a segment on it recently and uses it for creating car parts.
Its absolutely out-of-control cool.
Yeah!!! Strosek --- or any other shape you want to stretch the fenders to be. Start with a scan of either, and let Jadz928 work his magic in Pro Engineer from the base data. Or just stay with the autodesk / geo magic software in the laptop that is associated with the scanner.
Of course, its always about the fabrication...

And this particular fender had some damage, so it wouldn't be the best "base". See the little dent, for instance?
I'll try to encourage him to digitize the entire body of a straight car as time permits and talk to him about putting files into a form that could have utility.
(There are no intentions to try to profit commercially from this. Just happy to have some access to this extreme gear and cross it with the hobby! This kind of thing doesn't happen very often. )
Intention is to get some good scans and share them with some sort of freeware.

Just a thought, you could scan the sunroof and save the file and then use stereo lithography to make a replacement out of lightweight stuff. headlight pieces......... maybe very interesting tech
