Talking 85 928 Build. Let the pain begin!

My name is Paul and I live in Arkansas, I have played with Porsche's before. Mostly early 911s and 914s. I have always admired 928s and have been wanting to build one for a long time. So here we go....1985 928S US Auto 98000 miles. I started a thread titled "it only sparks once" and received very positive and helpful responses. Thank you. I will say that I am sure I paid to much and will not ever get what I will have in it back. However this is a father/son project and that is priceless. Here are a few pictures of how it was yesterday and how it is today.

Well, it definitely needs work, but it looks like you are diving in head first. Good luck with the rebuild; it should be a fun father and son project as long as you take it slow.

You might want to think about buying a complete used interior from someone parting a car. Cosmetic's can get expensive and that might be the cheapest and easiest way to tackle the interior.

Now that is a project. It looks like everything needs to come out and be cleaned/inspected/possibly replaced. Your spending has just started.

Congrats on undertaking this as a father-son project, that's great! Hope you get it to a point where you are both happy and proud of your work together! You're attitude going in is perfect- getting investment back out really isn't realistic except in the rarest of cases. Sometimes its "about the process" and the payout is reflected elsewhere than the balance sheet.

I admire the Father Son project. I think my son at seven months is a tad young yet. Although, two months ago I tried to convince my fiance that another local 928 for sale was the perfect Father Son project!

.....that got squashed.

Best wishes on the rebuild! Have fun!

Good thing to understand up front.

However this is a father/son project and that is priceless

Good luck w/ your project, looks similar to mine !
You may want to plan to just pull the eng and go through it as the car will most likely need MM's and Pan Gasket, Cam cover resealing, etc.
All done w/o much effort on an Eng stand.

Welcome to the show. This is an extensive project. Will be great to see the recovery and restoration documented. A great father son project unless it was like the F/S projects I did with my Dad. I did all the extra dirty work he did all the finish work. Kept telling me I needed to start at the bottom and work my way up. Can't say that thinking ever endeared any of the F/S projects we did. I felt like free labor. Be mindful of this and make the crappiest/dirtiest work a mutual effort and the project and memories will be positive.

Thanks for all the comments! Dan I will keep what you said to heart, I want it to be fun not work for him.

Ok first question of many- Should the intake manifold have a gasket? Mine did not.

#2 Will the engine mount to a standard engine stand? I sold the stand that I used for 911' years ago.

If you have the right bolts and the stand has the adjustable parts, sure, I had no problem.

Euro's have indv. paper/cardboard gaskets, I would think it is SOP.

It is a heavy engine do not use a cheap engine stand. Also undo the crank bolt BEFORE removing the engine......and check the compression and crankshaft end play before you go much further because you need to know that you have a decent engine.
