Yes you can turn the engine with no intake just be sure to pull the fuel pump and ignition fuses or relays. You actually may get higher readings since the air gets into the cylinders easier......And do check the movement back and forth of the crankshaft. The automatics have a tendency to overload the thrust bearing which can ruin the engine !

Ok I found an 87 S4 does not run but has a good interior and some other parts that I am looking for $1900.00. The owner says he does not know why it does not run (he is a higher end dealer) So I figure he really knows it is a TBF. I would part the rest of the car. What do you think?

Too much for a non runner is my first reaction.

Maybe it has suspension and brakes and spindles for upgrades, maybe some interior parts. The upgraded brakes, though would make NO difference unless on the track. S brakes are excellent for street. And that's not your objective, so ignore.

But your issue is mechanical, base operational. Only real useful thing would be engine, which is not exactly like yours, but you expect its bad. Maybe an auto trans, but if the engine is bad you can't test it. And trans rebuild is doable, guy just did one on Pelican.

There are dozens of these basket cases out there at any one time. The more you buy, the more you will wish you purchased one good one.

I'd follow the project to clean / assess / fix for now.

Unless I'm missing something.

Well back to the 85S project. I have been occupied with my new to me 86 euro and had not focused on this project. Any my son and I got out in the garage on Sunday and got busy. Here are a few pictures of our progress...

It will get back together, we are doing a color change and I want it all changed not just what you can easily see. You will have to look hard for any blue when we get done.

I have always felt that it is better to get the engine work done first, so I don't mess up the new paint bending over the fenders. Having the fenders off makes it easier...

The engine is coming out this weekend, once we get the work on the engine completed and the engine compartment painted and detailed we will get it back in the car and begin the body work.
