Well a friendly howdy from the great white north eh!
Still trying to find the right early 928 to buy, I'm having no luck finding any with service records in these parts.
So far I have seen these:
An 84s, only 77,000km's, but has been sitting for 9 years and no service records at all. I walked away.
Went to look at an 85s (166,000km's) last night in Toronto, but alas it had no records as well, plus the Belt Ten light was on. And it was at dealer and they seemed a bit shady. I offered him 5k for it, thinking he would not accept and he did. On the way over to his office my gut told me to walk away so I did. I'm pretty sure that car had been sitting for at least 3 years, so I thought has that belt ten light been on for two weeks or two years. ANd the seat electrics were not functioning properly.
Any way's I'm still hunting, going to look at an 82s 5spd on Monday, with 120,000km's.
Gonna hold out for a clean example with records.
Also I'm pretty sure I want to get an early model any way.
Any tips on which models are the least troublesome? I have heard the early versions fuel injection system is less complicated and easier to repair.
I have been a long time RX-7 owner, but have always wanted a 928.

Cars with records are hard to find. The <85 models are easier to work on, less complicated electrics, etc. They get testier as they get newer. Can't really give single out any one thing as problematic. All automatics should be checked for flex plate deformation as this can result in thrust bearing death. You should buy the best you can afford that leaves you some budget for catching up on deferred maint. I hesitate to post a grid as to what you can expect for X dollars; prices are all over the place and you just don't know what might turn up. Chances are you need to travel a bit to find what you want. Craigs List cars and their sellers tend to be less well documented. People here are very critical but we put a lot into our cars both in time and $$. There is tons of stuff here as well as classifieds. Look on autotrader.com, cars.com. Best thing is to find somebody near you who has one or better, find a mechanic who can do a PPI, but that only works for cars near you. Good luck.

If you're looking at early 5 speeds, make sure it shifts well up and down, or budget for a trans rebuild with new synchros. I have driven some pre-85 5 speeds that shifted so bad I would say almost undriveable.

Canada has easy import rules for older cars, so I would be looking at a Japanese market 928's.
Most reliable and cheapest, 83/84 US automatic.
Take a look at what is done in a good PPI, don't make any more offers without a PPI.

Wow, I feel lucky with my 2. The 86.5 has been in the family since late '88 and I have a folder 2 1/2" of reciepts and work I've done. My '81 has nearly all work done also. When I bought it the glove box door would not open, when I finally opened it there was the first 4 years of work reciepts done on car. Since then both have had motors out to do re-seals and maintenance records kept very good and up to date. (I thought most did this also, but to many it is just a car apparently) Good luck on your search Adam, don't get in a hurry and get the one you fell really good about. It will have problems (they all seem to) but one you like is easier to work on.

I'm going to see an 87 on Monday, 3rd owner and all records back to day 1. Timing belt done, water pump done, rebuilt tranny in 2006. New tires etc. Sounds good and is just within my price range. Will get a ppi for sure. I know the right one is out there somewhere. But I think I'm going to stay auto, I have a touch of arthritis in my left foot. I can live without full records as long as it looks like PM was kept up to a certain degree. This 87 has about 80k miles on it. It's about a 2.5 hour drive to get to her, but I think I have exhausted all local cars.

You know you should join the forum to get full access to more info.
I belong to both Rennlist and 928 owners club.
There are a few guys in your area that you should talk to to help with info on the car that you go to look at. Never hurts to take some buds along.
Martin is in ontario as well.
I managed to get a 89 S4 that was brought in from Japan by a car lot.
With a safety inspection it was $10,200 and 92,000k on the clock.
learn which one you really really want and only look for that one in the color you want.
It took me 3 months wait for this car.
worth the wait. goes like stink, and now its getting my personal touch.

Actually, the car in going to hopefully see in Monday is an 86s, not sure if it is the 86 or 86.5, I will have to check the vin. From what I have read everything from 1001 and on had the mid year revisions. I'm guessing that's in the last 4 digits of the vin.

Interestingly there was an Adamant in CO with a GTS back in the old Porsche List days! Good luck with your quest...don't worry to much about records if you can get a VERY GOOD and 928 specific PPI done and the car checks out ok!
