Mechanics deal with this risk the second the keys are handed over with every car they work on.

With that mentality, you would never do a compression check in a PPI, what if you damage a spark plug cable? Or damage a plug and now it's stuck in the head?
No way you would take a wheel off, what if a lug has damaged threads and now you've made it worse?
Heck, don't even open the hood, the cable might snap or get jammed and now you've got that problem on your hands.

In the Ferrari world a leak-down test is considered routine for a PPI and we are arguing about crank end play which is 100x's easier???
This place never ceases to amaze me.

Would you buy a 5-speed without inspecting the clutch? I hope not.

What I'm learning in this thread is how many people do not really understand what PPI is for.

TBF of mainly 928 automatics is a very real and very documented problem.

If one is interested enough to want a PPI to be done on a car, then known problem areas of that car should be checked.

If the potential buyer chooses to ignore the known problem areas, why have a PPI done in the first place?

If I were buying any 928, the PPI would include a crank shaft end play measurement.

Im just pointing out why most PPIs probably wouldn't include an end play check for $325...lots of extra work....(If Sean does that..then his clients are getting a smoking deal)..

I think someone posted that he got a quote for $600 to do the ppi with the end play check...that sounds more like a reasonable charge to get that deep into a 928.

Should a end play check be included in all PPI's done on a 928...??... Heck...just release the pressure...pklamp it.....and you'll be good to go for the next 100k miles

Have 6 replacement exhaust bolts and 2 gaskets ready.
Lift. 30 minutes. Done.

Not getting the misconception of the added work.

I mean, its tough to inspect the car in a basic sense without pulling the belly pans anyway.

You might not be surprised by how many are not willing to pay that much. Especially when they were quoted $400.00 for the same service from another shop, and it wasn't included in it. I'm of the opinion that the places here in DFW hate to work on these things. Just had another GTS towed in for some work because one of the larger names in Porsche repair (sponsor here) didn't want to work on it so they quoted about 4x what I'd charge, then told them about Roger and I. Works for me. I send them most of the 911 work I don't want to deal with.

I know the flex plate should be checked, I also advise people that it should be checked. It's not my issue if someone doesn't want to have it done. I will admit that I've done it free of charge and not even told them about it, on a few cars. But they also had X-pipes and were cars I'd done a fair amount of work on in the past. More for my own peace of mind than theirs.

Got any data on that?

For the life of me I can not see where that clamp is going to do a bit of good.

What kind of data would you like?

First hand experience not good enough?

I know we have all ready had movement from one of them, and yea that is good enough for me.

I just do not see how it is going to add any additional clamping force.

I know Constintine tried to use a similar set up and found through testing that it did very little, if any thing.

As far as I know he is the only one that has done any actual testing of pull out force on one.

Yes, Bill Ball had about 1mm of movement in 10k miles. Which was way less than he had previously w/o it. The last 7 I checked here had zero movement in a year, where my car that did not have one, moved over 2mm. That's good enough for me.

All you automatics guys, arguing about your clamps. So cute.

Would definitely be a part of any PPI I'd have done on an auto 928.

Possibly so. Rhubarb season overlaps with strawberry season in June so a great Summer thing and we've had a good long time to anticipate it.

Okay so I like pie....

How pervasive is this issue? Really? Can anyone quantify? Will EVERY automatic trans 928 (only 4 valve motors?) eventually suffer from TBF? I've heard/read a lot about it and the possible solutions but, have never had first hand experience with one (only had 2 AT 928s though) or anyone who has had a 928 that suffered TBF (which btw, is easily confused with Timing Belt Failure.....).

Is this one of those "vocal minority" topics or a REAL concern? Seriously, I want to know.
