Default Building New Engine

I have never built an engine before in a car. Swapped out many, generally very mechanically adept.

I got a cleaned, honed and Nikasiled block from Carl at 928 Motorsports today.
It comes with forged pistons, forged connecting rods, a stock crank and an oil pan.
Also, new rings, full gasket set and new bearings. Why not a stroker. Cause that is way more money than I want to spend right now. I am more inclined to go the supercharger route anyway and this 85-86 block with the thick walls seems to be the right block for the job.

I just have to go up and get it. Then I have to build it.

I am looking for tips and tricks from those of you who have built engines. I have the WSM so I can follow directions.

I have a pretty good set of tools, enough that I was able to tear the heads off.

So. Chime in with your experience and I'll post pictures throughout the build so you can all live vicariously through me.

Clean room type thinking is required, imo.

Get a really good engine stand.

Get a REAL spring compressor - make your life easier.

Get NEW pin clips if you don't have them already.

I'd have the assembly balanced and the pins honed to the pistons.

Rings - Gently file the sharp ends. Gently!

Oh - CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN... CLEAN

Get the mating surface where the heads go on the block machined flat.

Heads - A whole 'nuther story.

GregB has been building engines for quite a long time - maybe hit him up.

When you are building a new engine, except for the main hard parts, there is no "I think I should reuse that"

It might help if you let us know if the parts you are going to use are OEM or aftermarket. Are you sure the bearings are mic'd out for the crank/rods you will be using? Etc.

I'll be bringing this stuff up to Carl for sure. I'll let you know when I know.

You live in Iowa Jeff. Just run ethanol for boost and never look back.
