Heck I bought my 928 17 months sight unseen. Just a cars.com ad with no pictures just a few description lines. Knowing nothing about Porsches or 928's. I just knew the 928 was an affordable Porsche. Called and spoke to the owner a older gentelman learned he was the 2nd owner for the past 15 Years. So that told me he took care of the car. Bought a one way ticket to Sacramento and drove the 215k car back to Texas. I would consider myself luckily or just someone who knows people or just a little of both. I have enjoyed driving, working and learning about the car. However I do worry about the day when something major happens or something minor that is giving the car fits, that will beyond my wrenching expetise, however with people like Roger, Mr. Merlin and Dr. Bob and others I am certain I have a good shot of keeping up with her.

928man, I don't think there is anything wrong with you buying a car this way. I do think it is very bad advice to give to others.
People come to this board to avoid the pitfalls that surround ownership of one of these cars. There are extremely knowledgeable people that make ownership possible for me and many others. Mrmerlin's advice is very, very solid.
I think it is very likely that if someone followed your advice, they will have a very unpleasant and unneccessarily expensive ownership experience.
I mean no disrespect and hope no offense is taken.

Bob: your point is well taken, just a personal preference from my view, probably not good advice for a newbie unless they are aware of the risks involved. But my main point was that you have to like the car first & foremost, there is a gut feeling you get when you find a car you like. mrMerlin is correct in his logic & as I said before I don't argue the point.

If at all possible, take an expert in 928s with you, or extend your area of search and pay a know 928 expert to do a PPI for you on any 928's that you like the look of from the advert. That way you will know what you are getting yourself into. If it's an auto later than MY 84, ask if the flex plate tension has been released. If you get a blank look, get it checked as part of the PPI, or you could be buying a scrap engine.

It's money very well spent.

You've got some great advice already ... proceed carefully and keep asking for guidance and help here.

For your first 928 you should do your research thoroughly and buy the best one you can get ... to avoid that awful gut wrenching feeling of buyers remorse when you find your new pride and joy turns out to be the car from hell ... and it's beyond your capability practically and financially to fix.

A good PPI is definitely money well spent.

Good luck.

A PPI (pre purchase inspection) by someone who knows 928, is your best insurance.
Pre US 85 models are non interference engine, if the T-belt goes, the engine should be ok.
The red ones are faster but the black ones are bad ***.... Good luck.
Mine is a MY84 AT. Best car I have ever driven.....

Check out the 928OC.org. There are a bunch of NJ guys, including me on it. I don't wrench but have owned 4 928's. I'm in Northern NJ.

Bill, once you get hold of a good 928 you might lobby to increase your range! Great road car.
