Default What is the best way to polish the spider

In typing that title it seems it could be misconstrued to mean something other than what it is.

No Oriental massage parlor action.

I am looking to polish the spider on my 82. I really like the way it dresses up the engine.

I was looking for suggestions on the proper technique.

Remember seeing someone used a brass wire wheel if I remember correctly.

Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Thom

I tried polishing mine: too much work. Then I tried sodium blasting them: too dull. Then I did the wire wheel thing: looks great to me.

imo this has the best result, not too shiny, not dull, smooth as can be, a unique finish that does not need to be redone. The way it should have come from the factory.

large 3M wheel on a professional buffer

excuse the marks on the plenum, was a cold day and just testing new camera, those marks were from the drooping hood insulation that kinda stuck.

Look for an electropolishing company near by. Easy cheap, non damaging and long lasting results.

I used on of those little bench mount belt sanders that also have a disc sander. Cleaned all rhe cast seams and marks off the runners and smoothed the top of the spider. I finished with Duplicolor ceramic silver and ceramic clearcoat.

Mr Wiki can get you up to speed on this decades old common metal processing.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electropolishing

"Electropolishing, also known as electrochemical polishing or electrolytic polishing (especially in the metallography field), is an electrochemical process that removes material from a metallic workpiece. It is used to polish, passivate, and deburr metal parts. It is often described as the reverse of electroplating. It may be used in lieu of abrasive fine polishing in microstructural preparation.[1]"

OH, works great on almost all metals from Aluminum to Stainless Steel...and even 928 Exhaust Products... :-)

Before...

After...

They are called belt file sanders. Not very expensive unless you go Ryobi or Dewalt. Looks like a angle die grinder with a belt sander sticking out. Goes in small spots. Start with 120 grit, and just work your way up to 800. After that, go by hand to 1500, then a polish wheel.

It takes several hours to do the plenum, but the tubes will go much faster.

That's what I used, only mine was bench mounted. Worked good for intake items, but on larger pieces the hand held would prob be better.
