Default Thougths on what this will cost me (87 S4 5Spd)

All four wheels show signs of curb damage
The front tires are not matched to the rear
Car needs a four wheel alignment
The RF tire rubs the fender, fender should be rolled
There are several wiring issues with car that appear to be extensive
A large amount of the ABS wiring system is exposed
The rear deck lid of the car does not open correctly
Interior lights are functioning incorrectly
Various lights are out, parking lights, turn signals, lic plate, etc.....
windshield washer system is inoperable
Both the driver and passenger seat adjustment switches are inoperable
The A/C system is inoperable
There are several oil leaks, oil pan, rear cam plugs, several lines. It appears there are
more leaks, motor would need to be degreased and washed to further diag
The car is in need of a "full" service including, plugs, wires, caps & rotors, all filters
and fluids, gear oil service, brake bleed, drive belts, wiper blades, etc...
The locking collars on the suspension are bent, and the LR perch is bad
The re-paint is sub standard
The sun roof operates very slowly, and would need more time to diag

All four wheels show signs of curb damage - New wheels?
The front tires are not matched to the rear - Depending on sizes figure $500-1000
Car needs a four wheel alignment - $100-200 (make sure the shop knows how to align a 928)
The RF tire rubs the fender, fender should be rolled - Tires shouldn't rub casued by size or offset?
There are several wiring issues with car that appear to be extensive - as much as you want to spend
A large amount of the ABS wiring system is exposed - See above
The rear deck lid of the car does not open correctly - new latch reciever from Roger
Interior lights are functioning incorrectly - see above
Various lights are out, parking lights, turn signals, lic plate, etc..... - see above
windshield washer system is inoperable - see above
Both the driver and passenger seat adjustment switches are inoperable - see above
The A/C system is inoperable - could be a number of things (check charge and operation of compressor first)
There are several oil leaks, oil pan, rear cam plugs, several lines. It appears there are
more leaks, motor would need to be degreased and washed to further diag - Anywhere from a few hundread to a motor pull
The car is in need of a "full" service including, plugs, wires, caps & rotors, all filtersand fluids, gear oil service, brake bleed, drive belts, wiper blades, etc... - $2500 or so depending on how deep you want to get (TB/WP, refresh intake?)

The locking collars on the suspension are bent, and the LR perch is bad - $1000+ for new shocks/springs before install cost
The re-paint is sub standard - $$$$$$ Depends on what you want to do.
The sun roof operates very slowly, and would need more time to diag - $200 to clean rails and check motor/gears

Easier to buy a better shape S4 unless you are getting it for free and can live with a few issues.

Don't even think about buying this car if you're going to have a shop do the work. Based on this list, I suspect you would be in for some additional surprises also which you haven't listed. You'd be way ahead starting with a nicer car.

If you've already purchased the car, then congrats and good luck

More than you can possibly imagine.........and no matter how much you spend something else is going to need fixing as time goes on. There is never a point at which the car is done, only when you are done !
It costs about the same to restore a big block 1967 Corvette Coupe or a real Hemi Cuda, 67 911S , or even a 1967 Rambler Marlin. Well maybe not the Marlin. There are three main aspects to any car..body paint, interior, and mechanical. You never ever want to do all three on a car. Two out of three is bad enough. If the car really only needs one area restored it MIGHT make economic sense. If taking apart and rebuilding cars is a HOBBY (preferably that you do yourself) then it is the process, the journey and not the destination that matters. Or if you are very well funded it can be fun to envision the car of your dreams and have it built for you just as you want it just recognize that if it rolls across the stage at B-J it MIGHT bring 1/2 of what you spent on it .

I would be more worried about things you can easilly see. The car clearly hasn't been well maintained, so will be a money pit with lots of nasty surprises...

Did you already buy it? I bought a slightly better car than that for $3700, and have slowly poked at getting it up to speed. I've gotten it to the daily driver level without putting in serious $, but the next couple of steps are big ones. I figure I will pull the motor and do a total intake refresh, timing belt, water pump, porkensioner, super clamp, and motor mounts. Probably double my investment right there, even doing it myself. And it will still need paint. Sometimes wish I had not gone this way and think about bailing, but the fact is I might not ever have gotten around to buying a S4 unless it was so cheap I could not say no.
