Default '91 Auto Trans 2-3 flare, fluid, hoses etc

Hi,

I have finally gotten around to working on the trans. It had the 2-3 flare when I bought it. Since I was worried about crank endplay I didn't drive the car more than to get it home and empty the tank. Apart from the flare, which got less as the trans warmed up or almost disappered when accelerating gently, the box seemed to work normal when hot.

So the worry list:
2-3 flare
low fluid
fluid brown
flexible hoses with cracks.

Drained fluid, brown but couldn't find any grey-metallic deposits in the pan. Plastic tank had a brown deposit in it. Got about 7 and bit liters out of the whole system (body, converter, cooler) - so about 0.5 liters low.

New fluid and filter is going in, K1 spring replacement, all flexible lines are being replaced.

Should I fill the trans and then drain/fill through the connections at the cooler to rinse out any old fluid or fill trans, drive a while to check it out and then replace fluid/filter again after a few weeks.

Thanks
Oliver

Make sure you drain the torque convertor as well. It should be good after the fluid/filter change and the new spring. I see no need in replacing the fluid/filter again after a few weeks.

I would use Dexron VI. It is a better fluid, and there seemed to be general consensus on the GM web sites that shifting was slightly, but noticeably better with VI. I changed the wife's Suburban to VI using the "disconnect the return line and pump the fluid out" method, and the shifting was noticeably better.

Disconnect the line returning from the cooler to the transmission, run the engine until the fluid quits coming out. Drop the empty pan, clean, install new filter, install. Add fluid, run til it quits coming out. Add fluid, run til the fluid looks clearer or until you have drained slightly more than the transmission holds. Bring fluid level to between the top two marks.

Oliver,
After all of the above and you still have a flaring you may need to adjust your modulating valve to firm up the shift pattern.

Thanks for that.
I'll be a few weeks before any driving happens....fuel tank, radiator, alternator, PS pump.....need to go back in first.
