Does anyone offer,or know where I would be able to acquire, the starter ring gear for a dual disc clutch intermediate plate? Just the gear not the whole plate? My IMI mini starter cooked the ring gear on a new intermediate plate and I don't really want to replace the whole thing if possible. Thanks,
Ed
The early ones had a removable ring gear but are NLA. You could try one from an automatic, they look similar and I do know that 928INTL has used ones. You might be able to re-drill it if it doesn't already interchange perhaps.

I am curious if you ever figured out why the stater cooked the ring. I to installed an IMI starter on my dual disk clutch and it also sheered off several teeth, like it was not quite aligned. This is the same starter that was on my single disk clutch and automatic without issues.
When you replaced the starter ring did you use the IMI starter again?

IMI starters can be installed with the solenoid right under the center of the oil pan (like stock) or off to the left.
If you flipped the starter from where it was on your automatic, so the solenoid position changed, you also have to change the aluminum adapter on the IMI starter...there's a built in offset.
Failure to do this is tough on ring gears and the starter.
If you need a ring gear, I've got a couple of broken intermediate plates, for a donor.

hi Greg, I installed the imi starter with the solenoid inboard under the oil pan, the same orientation as it what’s on the car when it was and auto. But for some reason it didn’t mesh correctly with the starter ring on the clutch intermediate plate. Kinda a head scratcher. I when I remove the clutch I’ll recheck the starter bracket.
Also thanks for offer on the replacement starter ring. I’ll reach out to you directly. But how on earth does one replace the ring? It looks reverted with some pretty serious rivets, or is that press fit?

I'm not sure, since I've never done this.
I just know how tough it is getting to be to find a good intermediate plate.
BTW.....I've got my uber clutches back in stock.
If you are ever planning to increase the power of your GTS, this would be a fantastic upgrade.
And get far away from the issues with the Porsche dual disc, at the same time.
I made a comment on a similar thread recently about the imi pinion gear and about the lead-in chamfer. Lioking straight on at the pinion, the chamfer needs to be such that a cog at the 3 o’clock position will exhibit the chamfer at the top of that cog. If it is at the bottom of the 3 o’clock cog it is not correct for 928 starter fore / aft orientation. If the imi pinion chamfer is on the correct face, then compare the shape of the imi chamfer with that of the bosch. Locally where I live (Australia) imi starters are known to be hard on ring gear - possibly because of the chamfer difference? I am not convinced that any benefits of the imi starter outweigh the ring gear eating disbenefits. Regards. DaveO
