OB Speedometer bouncing needle below 2 MPH and reverse
I've had a pesky problem with my speedo needle. It bounces around when I'm going very slow. Might jump up to 30 MPH when I'm going 2 MPH. A few bounces and back to accurate again. Never happens at speed. Always happens in reverse. I've had the pod out recently and all looks good and I have a "new" (few years old few thousand miles use by now) circuit board and good clean connections. Checked the connection in the spare tire well and seems good too. Searched all around this fourm and nothing similar came up. I'm thinking speedometer speed sensor on tans is the culprit. Any advice?

It counts nine magnets as I recall on an aluminum wheel inside the diff and sends pulses to the head unit. Works much like a tachometer not sure what would make it send multiple pulses. The sending unit SHOULD close when the magnet is near. Might be the sending unit since it is what switches moves and generally speaking things which move fail more than things which do not.

I am having the exact same problem with my '82. Only difference is that the speedo was working fine until I removed the pod to replace the odometer gear. After the initial replacement I re-assembled everything and neither the odometer or speedometer worked at all. Ended up disassembling everything, re-soldering the speedo connections and re-assembling. Speedo and odometer now work but the speedo jumps around up to around 10 mph then settles down and becomes steady.
Still trying to diagnose. I didn't touch the sending unit at all, just the circuit board and odometer gear. I suspect it may be a poor solder joint but I am a little bit leary of taking it apart and re-soldering the joints again. The plastic PC board is no longer available and I'm a little nervous of doing more soldering on it, thinking I may go overboard and ruin the pc board/film.
So if anyone else nhas fixed this problem, I'd love to also know what the solution turns out to be.
