Default Combo Relay Kills My Car (88 S4)

Relay #24 the big wide one on the far right...if I wiggle it, **** clicks away, and my car dies.

This is the "dont put foot on panel, or car dies" issue.

Why would this relay kill the car???

Well...

-3- times, the headlights did flicker off, then back on while driving.

It sounds like there is a short in the relay. The flickering lights and kill spot would probably indicate a short to ground in the relay. Just a WAG.

I am guessing that the problem is not #24 (it is just lights), but that wiggling 24 moves the terminals and wires in the CE panel, and wiggles wires to a neighboring relay. Number 25, for example, is the LH relay, and an intermittent connection there would certainly cause an issue with engine running.

I have had similar, but different, problems with unrelated relays affecting other circuits. My climate control dies because of my window winding relay. Cleaning contacts fixed for a couple months, but the problem is returning. I'm hoping the problem is internal to the relay, I have a new one. I would suggest you buy a new relay, funny things happen with dying relays.

x2 It does sound like a CE issue........I would pull the LH relay and clean the connections......I'd guess they need some attention....
