Default Torque Tube Bearings

Almost time to rebuild the tube on the '88 5-speed and I like to know if the best replacement (I am not talking of the great one's made by Constantine) is still the SKF #60062ZJEM ?

Not expensive at around 25$ each ...

Thanks

You can find that bearing for a lot less than that. Almost anything you find will be better than the bearings used by porsche.

Hi Luc,

Yes those are the right size stock replacements with steel shields. Just make sure you use a top shelf brand of bearing which SKF is.

Other rebuilders also use plastic/rubber shielded bearings in those sizes.

Best,

The plastic inserts between the bearings and the shaft will likely fall apart. Also the rubber rings that hold the bearings in place may separate after hammering them out and back in again. I tried rebuilding my own with stock type bearings and realized pretty quickly that I had wasted my time and money and sent it to Constantine instead. I don't shy away from many 928 jobs but I won't try that again, at least not without Constantine's bearings. While you've got the tube out you should probably replace your shifter ball cup and bushings.

For that job, why wouldn't you use Constantine's bearings? I wouldn't want to go back in there and do it again.

Not to put constine down, but I did not find the job all that hard.

http://www.kondratyev.com/porsche/te...orque_tube.htm

Jaeger makes sells some plastic inserts. The carriers came apart easily. I used pop riviets to insure they would stay together. Cutting the bell housing allowed the tube to come out easily with out pulling the transmission. On a scale of 1 to 10 for difficult jobs I would put it at a 3. Now the toughest and most time consuming job was getting the windshield washers working.

Hi Dan,

Guessing spelling a three syllable first name isn't your cup of tea? :^)

Rebuilding a 928 TT isn't the hardest job but it isn't easy either, especially when the parts inside are old and can be damaged during the rebuild.

That's why we designed our products, especially for DIYers. Makes the job go much easier with better end results and also updates the driveline with bigger bearings, a more robust housing and a better bearing insert which coddles the drive shaft in more rubber, further decreasing the felt driveline vibrations. Also not having to re-use the old vibration dampener which will come apart sooner or later is another plus.

Using hard delrin for the bearing inserts will wear away the protective coating of the drive shaft. We are already seeing many drive shafts with very worn rings just from the stock bearing inserts being worn out and sometimes coming apart which then leaves metal to metal contact.

Our pricing really isn't that bad either.

Cheers,

Just curious Constantine, what does a set of your bearing cost?

Maybe I will replace the TT bearings on my 928 next year, and I like to upgrade it while I am at it, so your bearings seem a good idea.

Cheers

Just click on the link Michel for Black Sea R&D in his Signature and it will go over all their products with prices. BTW, I hope all is well over their in the Netherlands. My best friend lives in The Hague and I have visited twice. Everyone was really nice and had a great time.

Super Bearings are also definitely on my to do list on my rebuild. Take Care.

Thanks for the feedback, Constantine pointed me to his link ans prices.
Seems like a good upgrade for a fair price. Will certainly upgrade to superbearings when I replace them.

My car does not really make a lot of noise at the TT yet, except > 5.000 rpm a soft whine occurs, so I guess they are going to fail at some point in the future.

@Andrew, all is well here :-) Just not a lot of 928 fans here in NL, certainly not a nice community such as this forum :-)

If there is any room in your budget, you should seriously consider letting Black Sea R&D rebuild it.I have one of their rebuilts in my 85 track/street car and, although he doesn't know it yet, the Hanson race car torque tube is on its way for an upgrade. There is definite value in the price for their superior service and uber high quality parts.

We sell the high temperature SKF bearings for $34 each and the Delrin bearing inserts for $21 each - same for both sizes 28mm & 25mm.
We will also have the bearing carriers as well soon - though they do not need replacing in all cases.
For those who want to DIY.

Honestly I would not even consider using anything but the Superbearings, BTDT.
Once you get them in your hand you will understand the difference, they are massive compared to the stock ones.

I have read comments about how long the stock ones last, maybe I am the odd man out here, but I have seen them be bad at around 50,000 miles.

Too bad we vendors can't all work together to bring pricing down on known quality products that have already been developed to a very high standard.

Then resources can be focused on other problem areas for 928 owners.

Just thinking out loud.
