Wally, Stan,

No. I see the confusion. The Pioneer is looking for ground, not +12V. It's not clear from the installation manual what happens with the car's handbrake switch, but you can assume the switch is open when the handbrake is set and closed when it is released.

The Pioneer unit is looking for ground to DISABLE the video play features.

With the Pioneer unit powered up, you will likely find that the Pioneer's handbrake wire also measures +12V with the voltmeter when this wire is not connected to anything.

for my alpine unit i used one of the DEI modules like Hans uses for the switch panels. then you can set the clock, watch vid, or do anything else like normal. no hitting the brake, crossing your fingers, tap the clutch, open the window 1/4 way then you can do it....

There are plenty of existing bypass modules out there to solve this problem, and they are all less than $30... I think the PR1 should work in this application, but there are others. It may be worth the expense to save yourself time and frustration. Just a thought.

If it were me, I'd hook up the rest of the harness, then put a jumper onto the video disable wire and try it floating, grounded, and connected to +12 to see what it's really looking for.

If it's looking for +12 to enable video, I'd tap into the Brake lamp for the dash (assuming this is an analog dash car - and that that lamp has 12V switched, rather than ground switched). Otherwise, a small SPDT relay may be the simplest choice to invert the signal.

For what it's worths, I have 2 Pioneer navi units (AVIC X1R and a AVH P6500), and they both need to see ground to unlock and play video.

But to make sure I would just try it, the unit will not blow up if you connect the lead to ground, just try it and see what happens.

Add a small switch to ground that the user can switch. Not everyone uses the parking brake.

I second that, my Kenwood AV (double-DIN Nav unit) unit use the same setup, simply looks for a ground in order to "allow" video playback and programming while the car is not stationary. From the words of the tech rep I spoke to: "the laywers made us put that connection there...", "just connect to a ground point and you're good to go"

Pioneer's system is most likely the same.

Cheers!

I prefer to trust myself not to turn on the p0rn when I'm driving rather than have the lawyers make the decision for me that I need to hack into a harness. I have an 8200 in my car and I actually haven't bothered to fiddle around with bypassing the switch or even hooking it up yet.

so if i dont connect this green wire then the video wont work at all?? ,

anyway i will get this wire connected to the brown yellow wire that goes to the hand brake switch thus it will allow video while the handbrake is set and the car is theoretically not in motion

Stan, for what it's worth I will never use the video - if it's hard to hook it up I'd just cap the lead and be done with it.

Dan it is not hard to hook up, with all of the assistance from these wonderful members.
i just want to understand the ideas that come with a new piece of equipment.
It should function as advertised.

This thread got me curious about these video lockouts so I did a bit of internet searching. It seems early lockouts were easily defeated by permanently grounding them. A newer generation want to see ground after they see an ignition-dependent power supply - a situation that would pertain if you pull over after driving, engage the parking brake then turn on the video. The mechanism to defeat them is apparently to use a ignition-dependent relay that provides ground to the lockout just momentarily after the unit sees power.

Thanks all - hopefully I will never ever see video on account of the wheels always rolling when I'm in the car! BTW it really is a nice unit for ipod/iphone integration and looks very restrained although not the classic becker/blaupunkt look.
