928 intermitent no crank
Hey guys need some help with occasional no crank on my 84 928 euro. So every once in a while the shark wont crank when i hit the key. Ususally i just let it sit over night and then it will start in the morning. If i jump the car it will always start. The interior lights headlights radio all still work and the car has a new battery and starter. Ignition relay clicks and is new. Car runs great no dimming lights but ocasionaly battery gauge will be a little on the low side, but usually it showing charging and rock steady. I'm thinking it has to be a ground issue. I don't have a multimeter right now so i can't verify the alternator is working but I've had altenators go on various vehicles and they don't drive normal if at all and the lights would always be dimming/flashing. If anyone has any input or ideas as to why the car won't crank every once in a while please help me out. Thanks Ken

Silence it does nothing ignition relay clicks but starter does nothing. It is an auto. Mostly it does it cold but a couples times it has done it when hot. Jump it and it starts right up and if I just let it sit for a while it will usually crank.

Okay just checked out the ce panel diagram for my car and xiv is starter relay which as posted above is new and clicking. Is there another relay I should check. Also if it's a relay y would jumping the car make it work?

Ahh there is a starter relay just replace it and the starter should work as advertised also clean the battery terminals and the ground points esp wher the ground connects in the hatch also clean the 14 pin connector above the hot post.
The relay should cure the problem and the cleaning program should prevent it from going bad.
Part of the reason the starter relay goes bad beyond dirty connections is from excessive cranking from the engine not starting quickly this is also due to dirty connections

Re jumping making a relay come alive: bad grounds, dirt, corrosion reduce current, maybe just enough that an old or lazy relay doesn't make the contact needed. Marginal voltage from the batt: same thing. Sharks are very finicky about volts. Most of us keep a TRICKLE charger on it if it sits more than a week (YMMV).

I had this issue a couple of years back on my 81 US 5-speed and I ended up having to replace the starter. That was after testing relays, cleaning grounds, and replacing the starter switch. The intermittent 'no-start' condition kept getting less & less intermittent until I was forced to deal with it.
Hopefully your experience will be less painful.

I had this problem turned out to be the ignition switch. I bypassed the relay with a momentary switch until I can get around to replacing the ignition switch.

Make sure the gear selector switch on the gearbox and the selector lever are correctly aligned with each other. That switch has contacts which only allow the starter to operate when you are in "N" or "R".
If the switch and lever aren't aligned, when you think you are in "N" or "R" at the select lever the gearbox switch may not agree !
Select "N" and then move then move the lever slightly too and fro while turning the key to confirm if this is the issue. Or the switch itself may be faulty....

Had the same problem 2 years ago. Replacing the starter worked for me, after checking relays and grounds. Technician told it was the wear of the coils in the starter causing the intermittent problem. So I am with qdac. Replaced the starter myself not that difficult.

Update guys I messed up a lil in the op. The car only does this when warm. When cool it always starts. The altenator is charging checked that today but got a little wiggle in voltage when using accesories. Im thinking that has to be the culprit because the car will start with a jump. starter less than a month old, relay new and checked, battery new
